lantlc Coast Conference teams

Davidson will be playing Its
first season under Coach Bob
McKlllop and moves into the
Belk Arena In the Baker Sports
Complex. The Belk Arena seats
6.000 for basketball and the
Wildcats' dedication game will
be December 2 against Terry
Holland's Virginia Cavaliers.
Holland will become the Wild
cats' Director of Athletics next
spring. He was a standout
player for Davidson in the 1960s
and was head coach for five sea
sons in the 1970s.
Virginia's appearance on cam
pus will be the first by an ACC
team since Davidson upset
Wake Forest In Lefty Drlesell's
first year as head coach in 1960.

idson December 21. It will be the
A Shoestring Catch
One of the most exciting things to watch in baseball is an outfielder
running at full speed, then leaping to make a catch just before a dying fly
ball hits the grass. Why is it that later in the game the same player might
pull up and play a fly ball on the first bounce'?
It isn’t that the player has lost his nerve. Playing the bounce was
probably a smart play. Depending on the situation, it may have been a
smarter play than the shoestring catch. And that’s the key to the whole
question of how to play a fly ball that may or may not be catchable. It all
depends on the situation.
Say you are in the later part of a game and the score is tied. If you
dive and miss, the ball could easily get behind you, and the runner will
make second base with little trouble and might get all the way to third
base. Now a routine fly ball becomes a sacrifice fly that scores the go-
ahead run. That kind of mistake is one the manager will have trouble
forgiving. It’s better to play the bounce and keep the runner at first base.
In the first few innings you will, quite naturally, take more of a chance
than in the ninth inning. But there are other factors to consider as well.
You certainly wouldn’t play the same way in the Astrodome as you
would on natural grass. On artificial turf if you drop a shoestring catch,
it’s more likely to bounce a long distance and result in a triple or an
inside-the-park home run.
So it depends on the score of the game, where you are playing and
who the base runners are. If the batter is fast, or if there is a good runner
already on base, that speed has to be taken into consideration.
If you get to the ninth inning leading by a run, the one thing the man
ager doesn’t want to happen is to have a ball hit over an outfielder’s
head. The word is "give them the single but don’t give them the dou
ble.’’ If you are at the stadium, look into the dugout and you’ll probably
see someone waving a towel. That means play back and keep all balls in
front of you.
The infielders also adjust in this situation. Early in the game, the third
baseman played “off-the-line," a few steps from the foul line towards
the center of the field. In the ninth inning, he will be “guarding the
line” because a ball hit down the line is just about an automatic double.
This is all just good, basic baseball. And it’s second nature, or should
be, with most players, ill

Ken Koontz Retakes Microphone
For J.C. Smith Football Games
He's back! Former broadcast
er and PR consultant Ken
Koontz, will return to the press
box this Saturday evening as the
public address announcer for
the Johnson C. Smith University
home football games. Koontz
will do the play-by-play calls
Saturday night when the JCSU
Golden Bulls host Virginia Un
ion at 7:30 p.m.
Koontz had made the stadium
call for the Bulls' home games
for 17 years before "retiring" last
year. Koontz said, "We missed
each other last year." When
asked to come back to the press
box this season, Koontz said he
"jumped at the chance." He add
ed, "That press box is a part of
me and so is Smith, my alma
mater. I guess we belong to

Scott Scheer said, "We are glad
to have Ken back. He has been
one of the University's best
friends over the years and an
awful lot of people were asking
