The groom-elect Is the son of Jesse Johnson -of Bent Harbor, Mich., and the late Ijouella Johnson. A Nov. 25 wedding Is planned at Second Calvary Baptist Church. Goodwill Store Offers Costumes Shoppers seeking Halloween costumes for adults and chil dren are Invited to shop at the Goodwill Industries' Super Store at Freedom Mall (1-85 & Free dom Drive) In Charlotte. The store will feature a Halloween Costume Comer from Saturday, October 16 through Tuesday, October 31. Throughout the year, as Good will Industries collected dona tions of clothing. Items espe cially suited for Halloween were saved and will be featured In the Costume Comer. In addition, volunteer 'Costume Consultants' will offer costume Ideas and suggestions for 'building' your own costume. Costume Consultants will be available, these days and times: Friday & Saturday, October 20-21, & 27-28 - 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Monday, October 30 - 11:30 am. - 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 31 - 11:30 - 4:^ p.m. This is the first year for our Costume Comer,' said Michael Elder, president. Goodwill In dustries of the Southern Pied mont. 'Costume shopping at Goodwill Stores has become quite a tradition in other parts of the country. People use their creativity to put together terrlflc costumes at a very low cost, and then often donate those Items back to Goodwill after Hallo ween. 'It's a unique way to help peo ple with disabilities in our com munity,' adds Elder. The dona tion and sale of clothing and other Items support Goodwill Industries work training and job placement services for people with disabilities. Eligibility; Any black writer who Is a North Carolina resi dent: open to writers of all gen res: poets, fiction writers, play wrights, nonfiction writers; winners must be available to read from their work at a public reading In the spring of 1990. Submission Guidelines: Each Writer may submit one entiy only; each entry Is limited to 25 doublerspaced, typed pages: submit 2 copies of your entry; do not Include name anywhere on manuscript; submit 1 typed cov er sheet with your name, ad dress, telephone number, the title (or tiles If applicable) of the piece (or pieces) you are submit ting; retain copies of your manu script because they will not be returned. Judging: Final Judging will be conducted by a nationally- known black writer. Last year's final judge was Bell Hooks, au thor of Talking Back. Prizes: Five winners will each receive a prize of $200. Any win ner unable to be present to read from his or her work at a public reading scheduled for the spring of 1990 will forfeit their prize. The prize wUl then be awarded to an alternate selected by the final judge. If any winner Is un able to read from their work be cause of a disability, alternate arrangements will be made to have their work read, and the prize will not be forfeited. Deadline: November 1, 1989. Entries postmarked after No vember 1 will not be considered. Winners will be announced in January, 1990.
