"Senator Helms stands for a past that generations of white and black Southerners have struggled to overcome," the non- partisan groups said In separ ate letters to the two bank chiefs. "When you host a fund raising event for Mr. Helms, you Identify yourselves and your In stitution with his beliefs." The fundraiser, which was held at the Charlotte City Club on Oc tober 23, was hosted by McColl, Crutchfield, four NCNB direc tors and one director of NCNB's North Carolina bank afflllate. The five NCNB directors were Alan Dickson, President of Rud- dlck Corp.: Frank Dowd, Chair man of Charlotte Pipe and Foundry: Albert Sloan, Chair man of Lance Inc.; retired NCNB Chairman Thomas Storrs; and Rick Henderlck, President of Management Corpo- Hendrlck ration. The letter to McColl noted that Helms' vote In favor of the $180 billion savings and loan rescue "directly benefits commercial banks like NCNB, which already has taken over billions of dol lars of banking resources as a result of the bailout" According to Federal Election Commission records, NCNB has contributed $4000 to Helms since 1984 through Its political action committee—most recent ly, a $1000 donation recorded on May 2, 1989.
