INTRODUCTION: God so loved the world - the swarming billions of humanity - that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever - whatsoever insignif icant individual - believes in Him might be saved from death to life eternal. God's concern for the globe - encircling forest Is expressed in Jesus care for each seedling Euid sapling and lightning - scarred snag in the whole stand. While on earth, Jesus performed many healing miracles: but with one exception they are reported as being accomplished one at a time, with great consideraUon for the special needs of each person. He did heal ten lepers in one batch, but that experience was disap pointing. In today's lesson we read of His finding - one hopeless In valid In a mass of more hop>eful ones, and making the hopeless one whole. It's just like Him to do It that way! Today's lesson calls attention to two examples of Jesus' healing. The first recorded in John 4:46-54. The second healing takes place some eighty miles southward to Jerusalem on a festival occasion. A large crowd of sick people were lying on the porches - the blind, the lame, and the paralyzed. A man was there who had been sick for thirty-eight years. Jesus saw him tying there, and he knew that the man had been sick for such a long time: ^ he asked him, "Do you want to get weU?" The sick man answered, 'Sir, I don't have anyone here to put me In the p>ool when the water is stirred up: whUe I am trying to get in, somebody else gets there first." Jesus said to him, "Get up, pick up your mat, and walk." Immediately the man got well; he picked up his mat and started walking. The day this happened was a Sabbath, so the Jewish authorities told the man who had been healed. This Is a Sabbath, and It Is against our Law for you to cany your mat." He answered. "The man who made me well told me to pick up my mat and walk." They asked him, "Who Is the man who told you to do this?" But the man who had been healed did not know who Jesus was, for there wets a crowd in that place, and Jesus had slipped away. Afterward, Jesus found him in the Temple and said, "Listen, you are well now; so stop sinning or something worse may happen to you." Then the man left and told the Jewish au thorities that it Jesus who had healed him." (John 5:1-15) (Also read John 4: 46-54) John does not indicate which of the. several annual feasts this was. Jesus' respect for the law would have caused Him to interrupt His Gallean ministry to attend one of the three pilgrim feasts (Passover. Pentecost, and Tabernacles): or His love for God's people could have drawn him to be with them and serve them even at a lesser occasion. He liked to be present where the tides of human need and opportuni ty were most full. Bethesda s reputation as a place for healing drew crowds of fall who were not able to function normally. The surrounding porticoes provided a sort of hospital waiting room for these who came every day. Attention Is focused on one Invalid In the multitude. The man's infirmity his disability, is not described. Jesus was making a hospi tal call! The Lord had come to Jerusalem for a religious festival, but this time He was not lingering in the temple as He had done almost twenty years ago. He was drawn Instead to the place where He would encounter the greatest number of folk who might recognize their need for his help. Once there He singled out a patient whose condi tion was most long- lasting and hopeless. He did not need to look at medical charts: He "Knew what was In the man." Did the man really desire healing? The man didn't answer Jesus di rectly. Almost defensively, he offered an explanation. Implying his earnest desire for his healing. "I have no man to put me In the pool." If anyone had assisted this man In getting to Bethesda, that person had not remained to assist him at the critical moment. Not totally helpless, the man was slow enough that he was left behind In every effort to reach the pool. Those who needed help the least would be most likely to get whatever help was available. It is ever thus, un- See Chrlstlike On Page 4B CHAPPELL MEMORIAL BAPTIST CHURCH Norman E. Kerry, PASTOR Rev. Norman E.
