Cherry Community Pulls
Together For Its Own
Neighborhood Watch
SPECIAL TO THE POST
Approximately 60 resi
dents of the Cherry Commu
nity attended a Neighbor
hood Watch program
information session at
Pleasant Hill Baptist Church
on Oct. 4.
Charlotte Police Captain
Maurice Keith and Officer
Nick PellicOne of the Char-
lotte-Mecklenburg Police De
partment provided informa
tion to residents about the
guidelines for Implementing
the program. Residents were
told about the importance of
deterring crime by utilizing
techniques such as engrav
ing valuable items within
their homes and placing
Neighborhood Watch signs at
various entry points
throughout the community.
Cherry is one of the oldest
African American commu
nities in Charlotte. Al
though it is somewhat more
diverse now, residents, both
old and young, black and
white, committed them
selves to doing all that needs
to be done to preserve the In
tegrity of the more than 100
year old community.
Residents asked Pellicone
about possible solutions to
problems such as slow re
sponse time from law en
forcement officers, and dis
patcher Insensitivity
towards a person who Is re
porting a crime in progress.
They also discussed the op
tions of having a communi
ty-based police unit esta
blished in Cherry, as well as
holding absentee landlords
accountable for the activities
which take place on their
property. In addition, resi
dents want strict enforce
ment of a curfew for the pub
lic park located in the
community.
The next meeting will be
held on Nov. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at
Myers Tabernacle AME Zion
Church. Anyone interested
in the program can call Tor
rence Powell, chairman of
the Cherry Neighborhood
Watch, at 334-1764 for more
information.
