Tillman has just had original poetry published in "Whispers In The Wind," a treasury of poetry compiled by the National Library of Poetry. Tillman's poem is titled "The Gift." Tillman has been writing for two years and his favorite subjects are history and Chris tianity. The National Library of Poetry sponsors Kwanzaa at Afro Center Tennant contests that are open to the public and pub lishes them in widely-distributed hardback volumes. • Melvin Tennant, president and chief execu tive officer of the Charlotte Convention & Vis itors Bureau, was re-elected to the board of the National Coalition of Black Meeting Plan ners (NCBMP) at their recent fall conference held in San Antonio, Texas. NCBMP, chartered in 1983, was developed to assist in the growth of African American meeting planners by sharing information from their peers, convention bureau person nel, hotel and restaurant representatives con- sultants and suppliers. NCBMP's spring conference will be held In Charlotte April 14-17. • Amy Rhyne and Allison Benjamin won recognition in a national essay contest. Rhyne and Benjamin, who participate in the Inroads program, took honors in the organization's national con test. Rhyne, a junior at N.C. State University in Raleigh, won $250 for her essay. She interns with Chubb Group of Insurance Companies in Charlotte. Benjamin, a sophomore at N.C. A&T in Greensboro, received $150 for her essay. She Interns with NationsBank Corp. in Columbia, S.C. • Ricky V. Hall Sr., vice chairman of the board of commissioners of the Charlotte Housing Authority, has been appointed by the National Association of Housing and Redevel opment Officials (NAHRO) to serve a two-year term on its Commissioners Committee. Hall is area supervisor for the Mecklenburg County Senior Nutrition Program, president of the Reid Park Community Development Corp. as well as a board member of First Un ion National Bank's Real Estate Trust Fund. Optimist contest Twelve students in the Mathematics and Science Network (MSEN) program at UNC Charlotte will partici pate in the Optimist Interna tional essay contest spon sored by the Hidden Valley Optimist Club. This year's subject is 'The Boundaries of Freedom." High school sophomores, juniors and seniors are eligi ble to participate. The Hidden Valley Club will select a first-, second- and third-place winner in the contest, with the first place entry moving on to dis trict competition. An ex- penses-paid trip to the Free dom Foundation at Valley Forge, Pa. for a conference on freedom awaits the dls- trict champion.
