Convention brings 6500 to city Continued frorh page 11A the scripture says that my people perish for lack of knowledge.” The convention offered a variety of workshops on the Old and New Testaments, goal-setting, youth confer ences on self-esteem and peer pressure and children’s con ferences. There were worship services and a slew of concert performances. Darlene Williams, a member of the Savannah Church of God in Georgia, said she looked forward to hearing the speakers. Her husband, their children, ages 6 and 9, and she drove from Savannah to attend NYIC ‘95. “I just hope to gain some thing that I can apply to my life,” she said. Harold and Elaine Gibson of Columbus, Ohio, said they have been attending the con ference for 10 years. “I hope my 17-year-old son will find his way to the alter and get saved,” Harold Gibson said. Ben Gibson Jr., 15, joined the church last year. He thought coming to the conven tion would help him become more spiritual. “I’m concerned about learn ing how to cope with things,” said the New York native. “Like peer pressure, girls, teen stuff.” Prim said he was pleased to see a successful turnout; how ever, he was disappointed that the money generated from the convention did not benefit more African American-owned businesses. “This convention will enrich this commimity upwards to $3 million,” he said. “We found it difficult ascertaining all the who’s who in the community for this city as to those black entrepreneurs that could ser vice this convention and par ticipate in renumeration from the contracted services we needed. “I would encourage all the black vendors and con stituents in the city of Charlotte, N.C. to unite their efforts to promote them selves.” NYCI ‘96 will be held in Chicago. Now she teaches about 45 students in private lessons, mostly piano. “What I'm see ing more and more is that it's awfully hard to find younger students working up to be church organists," Kerr said. “Kids these days are pulled lots of different directions and are talented in many different ways. It takes a big commit ment to say you will play for church and be there." Too many organists are asked to do too much, and that is adding to the organist shortage, Ritchey said. “The other problem is what one pays an organist. I'm very well paid here, but that's the exception," Ritchey said. “What a church really should do is sit down and total up the amount of time in weekly Sunday services in which music is directly involved. It's pretty striking. Musicians get nrettv short shrift."
