But as whites left the cities, congregations that used to have their pews filled to capacity have seen their numbers dwindle. In 1965, the church updated its doctrine so that the use of native cultures in the celebra tion of Mass were allowed. The move not only satisfied Hispanics, but also introduced gospel music to Mass worship. Now, the Catholic hierarchy wants to increase the number of African American parish ioners.
