Montessori (Pre-K-4) In the Montessori program children learn by working with specially designed, attractively displayed develop mental materials. Children work alone or in small groups, and develop a sense of self-esteem because they are given a balance of freedom and responsibility. The breadth of curriculum offered is vast: reading, writing, mathematics, geometry, history, geography, biolo gy, science, art, music, computer technology and physical education. Most often children enter the program at age four. In order for children to gain the greatest benefit they should attend through the 5th grade. For students entering after kindergarten, previous Montessori experience is recom mended. A summer orientation program for all new stu dents above first grade level will be provided at Billingsville. • Individual development at each child’s pace • Activities that assist students develop responsibility, self-confidence, independence • Classes with multi-aged grouping • New technology program School: • Billingsville Montessori (Pre-K-3) • Amay James Montessori (Pre-K-4) Both schools will add a grade a year until they reach grade 5. International/Global Studies (K-6) Modeled after a nationally acclaimed program called MicroSociety, International/ Global Studies is an exciting program that allows students to learn about the world by organizing and directing their own society. Students estab lish a functioning economy in the school and create their own government, currency and businesses. Students are encouraged to try new ideas, create their own products and initiate activities which will benefit the MicroSociety. They earn salaries and pay for goods and ser vices. • Foreign language instruction • Accelerated academic program • In-depth study of seven regions of the world • Students create newspapers, magazines, books, video ads and news programming School: Lincoln Heights Elementary (K-6) Accelerated Learning (K-6) The First Ward Accelerated Learning Academy pro vides a powerful learning environment. Techniques which have been used traditionally with gifted students are proving to be successful with all students. The learning rate of students is accelerated and enriched through high expectations for student achieve ment and through a variety of learning activities which increase students’ levels of understanding. The three basic principles of the school are unity of purpose, building on strengths and empowerment with responsibility. Students take advantage of community resources with in the classrooms and the extended day (supervised hours after the regular school day) activities that are provided through the cultural, business and scientific communities of the surrounding Uptovro area. • Flexible teacher schedules enable instruction to extend beyond the regular school day • High expectations for student achievement and behavior • Extended Day Program provides additional learning opportunities for students School: • First Ward Elementary (K-6) Year-Round School (K-5) The Year-Round program offers an alternative school calendar for families with children in grades K-5. Teachers and parents of students at Bruns Avenue Elementary are convinced that a balanced calendar is the best thing for young learners. The school year is divided into four 45- day quarters (beginning in July), each followed by a 15- day (three week) break.
