The film has played in limit
ed release since January. It
stars Phylicia Rashad (“Cosby
Show”), A1 Freeman Jr.
(“Malcolm X”) and Richard
Roundtree (“Shaft”).
The movie is an adaptation
of a novel by Clifton Taulbert.
It centers on a family living in
the midst of the segregated
South, but manages to main
tain its dignity and morals.
“Once Upon A Time” was
filmed in Wilmington in late
‘94 on a. shoestring budget,
according to director Tim Reid.
Despite setbacks, the film has
gained praise from the coun
try’s toughest critics. Gene
Siskel and Roger Ebert gave it
“two thumbs up.” Ebert went
on to say the film’s message “is
about the universal human
spirit.” Kevin Thomas of The
Los Angles 'Times called it
“splendid,” and said “it’s a
beautifully wrought film in all
its aspects.”
