ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT/The Charlotte Post Thursday, August 1, 1996 Festival combines new and old Continued From IB D.C. area and I’ve seen a lot of big shows. This one is as great, if not better than, shows in larger markets.” Ferguson said the show was also family oriented. Obscenity laws will be observed so rap pers and artists with raunchy lyrics have been warned. One act was escorted off stage when the language became rough. “It’s finally catching on that this is a positive family event,” Ferguson said. “I don’t think we’ll have much of a problem this year. It wasn’t much of a problem last year either. The biggest problem last year was the heat. Temperatures soared to nearly 100 degrees. Patrons and festi val planners were caught off guard. A number of patrons were overcome by the heat; a few were hospitalized. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid-80s Saturday. Sponsors can’t do anything about the weather, but they are planning ahead. “There are three vendors who will be selling water,” Ferguson said. “A (medical) RV will be set up in the middle of the field in case people start suffering from heat exhaus tion. First Aid is a priority this year.” The festival is attracting peo ple from around the region. Radio talk show host Tom Joyner of the syndicated Tom Joyner Morning show will be on hand to introduce some of the veteran acts and “to get my party on.” “I heard it was going to be a party and I’m going to be there,” Joyner said. “That’s right, old school will be in (ses sion).” Tickets for the event are $10 in advance.
