Whodini attempts new hits

Whodini will forever be
remembered for “The Freaks
Come Out At Night,” one of a
handful of rap songs that peo
ple remember from the ‘80s.
The group is attempting to
recycle itself through the help
of funkmiester Jermaine
Dupri, Atlanta’s hip-hop king.
The results are pretty good.
Dupri supplies some wicked
rhythms for the crew to work
with. They take advantage
most of the time, such as on
“Keep Running Back” and
“Can’t Get Enough.” The lyri
cal content is mild by ‘90s
standards, but rougher than
Whodini fans are accustomed.
The subject matter isn’t very
diverse - sex is about all the
group talks about. Still, this
makes for a good comeback
CD. Its success will depend
largely on how well the youth-
oriented market is interested
in a 12-year-old rap trio. We’ll
see.

‘Homeboys’ shows originality

I love the cast. Robin Givens
gives serial television another
shot. This time she’s the center
of attention at a father and son
law firm. Her clothing is a lit
tle too tight, but her comedic
skills are formidable. Also in
the mix is the surprisingly
funny Miguel Nunez Jr. He’s
the fly son with making him
self into the firm’s centerpiece
on his mind. Terrence Howard
plays the more serious son.
Both like Givens, which causes
some inter-office antics. “The
Fresh Prince of Bel Air” co-star
James Avery is the father, but
so far he hasn’t been given a
whole lot to do. Office manager
Kym Whitley is a scream.
Sherman Hemsley’s “Goode
Behavior” (9 p.m. Mondays)
may be the surprise hit of the
.season. Hemsley’s tack record
is flawless - “All In The
Family,” “The Jeffersons” and
“Amen!,” not a failure in the
bunch. This show will test his
resolve. He’s an ex-con who
comes to live with his son, a
college professor played by
Dorien Wilson (“Dream On”).
Willie Goode, whom Hemsley
plays, is well meaning, but
keeps embarrassing his son. It
doesn’t help that they’ve been
separated for 15 years. It’s
funny, but Wilson needs to
loosen up a bit.
The season’s most unusual
new show is “Homeboys in
Outer Space,” a send up on
every Sci-Fi space exploration
idea. Darryl M. Bell and Flex
star as the homeboys Morris
Clay and Tyberius Walker.
They are basically hapless,
bungling just about every job
they get. The show’s material
is so full of puns that they may
head. For instance they visit
a planet called Jack-Son 5 and
deal with a character named
Jed Eye who was seeking
revenge. The show’s best line
was when Tyberius was on the
pleasure planet and fell at the
feet of a beautiful attendant
and yelled “spank me, please.”
She quipped “not without an
appointment.” The funniest
element is the wacky comput
er Loquatia.
