It’s Award Season — The New York Film Critics Circle voted for its 62nd einnual film awards. Htirry Belafonte was voted Best Supporting Actor for “Kansas City,” and “When We Were Kings” was voted Best Non-Fiction Film. The New York Film Critics Circle Awards will be presented at a dinner on January 5 in New York City. — The People’s Choice Award nominees have been announced. Nominated in the Comedy Movie category was “The Nutty Professor,” and in the Dramatic Movie category, “A Time to Kill” and “Independence Da}^ got nods. “Cosby” got a nod in the New Television Comedy category and Bill Cosby in the Television Actor in a New Series category. Brandy got nominated for Television Actress in a New Series, and Murphy Houston Whitney Houston was nomi nated in the Female Musical Artist category. The People’s Choice Awards will be announced January 12 in Santa Monica during a tele vised ceremony. Eddie Murphy has signed his production company to a nonexclusive film development deal with Caravan Pictures which will give Murphy a chance to produce and direct, as well as star in the projects he develops. Holy Man (Tbuchstone Pictures), which begins shooting this summer, is the first project under the Murphy/Caravan banner. Murphy’s sequel to the hugely suc- cessfid “The Nutty Professor” is currently in pre-produc tion at Universal Pictures who hopes the film will begin shooting by late ■98. Babyface and his wife, Tracey Edmonds, have inked a three-year, first-look film pro ducing de^ with Fox 2000 for their new Edmonds Entertainment company. They’ve also signed a three- year first-look producing deal with 20th Century Fox TV. The feature film, “Soul Food,” currently filming in Chicago, is their first movie pro ject. George 'Tillman Jr. (“Scenes from the Soul”) is directing the film which stars Vanessa Williams, Vivica Fox and Nia Long. Edmonds Entertainment is also producing a romantic action film, “The Big 'lime” (Cinergi), which is outside of the Fox deal, and will begin shooting in the spring of ‘97. HBO has purchased the film rights to A r m 0 n d White’s forth coming book. Rebel For the Hell of It; The Life of Tupac Shakur, According to N e w s d a y columnist Liz Smith and the New York Posts’ Williams Shakur ‘Dish’ column, Quincy Jones and 'TriStar-Columbia had been negotiating with Shakur’s family in Atlanta. According to Smith, HBO plans to name the producer, director and star within a week or two. Takashi Bufford (“Set It Off)” has entered into a deal with Orion Pictures Corp. to write and direct Harlem Express, a hip hop comedy. This marks the writer’s directorial debut. Steven Spielberg is set to direct a historical drama ten tatively titled “Amistad” (a.k.a. Black Mutiny), which will be produced by Dreamworks Kctures in asso ciation with HBO Pictures. Debbie Allen (Fame, A Different World) will produce the film, which was developed in-house after Allen brought the story to the attention of Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, who will serve as Executive ftoducers. Amistad is the true story of a mutinty on the Slaveship Amistad, led by Cinque, who, along with 39 African captives, rebelled in the spring of 1839. Amistad will be filmed on location in Los Angeles, New England and the Caribbean. Principal photography will begin in February 1997. Quincy Jones and David S a 1 z m a n , have part nered with Columbia T r i S t a r Television Distribution (CTTD) to launch a late night, one hour syndicated entertainment talk series aimed at the urban audience and based on VIBE Magazine. The series is scheduled to begin airing in the fall of 1997. Jones and Salzman will serve as executive producers, along with Keith Clinkscales (CEO and President of VIBE), while CTTD will oversee the market ing and distribution of the series. SUBSCRIBE TODAY!
