That work introduced him to “GeoSafari” creator Stanley Resnicoff, a longtime New York educator known for brainstorming novel ways to get kids interested in learning. “GeoSafari is a proven thing, going aU the way back to the original GeoSafari board game Stanley came up with,” Havens said. “It’s been used with difficult-to-reach kids, kids the system was about to give up on, and the results were tremendous. There was a real tumaroimd.” Fifteen different games with names like Shark!, Animal Eye-D, Name that Bird Call and Weird World of Animals make up “GeoSafari Animals.” Each is an elaborate multiple choice quiz teaching species identification, behavior pat terns and individual animal characteristics. Video and sound clips of ani mals in the wild precede ques tions, accompan3ring text and narration round out the multi- media Q-and-A. The clock is running, so don’t dawdle pick ing answers. Limiting the allowable time increases game difficulty. There is plenty of variety in “GeoSafari” to keep learning interesting. Besides standard animal fare, there is a wildhfe skull identification game, an animal art gallery and some thing really cool called Micro Mysteries, a look at some com mon teeny-tiny items - includ ing insects and bacteria - via the super magnification pow ers of an electron microscope. It’s plenty of fun played alone, but up to four players or teams can play at once, so friends and family can explore “GeoSafari” together. Positive reinforcement is everywhere, from Havens’ encouraging baritone to per sonalized fireworks shows for perfect scores. Players have their own display case for medals and trophies bestowed for superior achievement. TTiey can also print out full- color award certificates for perfect games. “You can’t rely only on books with kids nowadays, kids who were brought up on televi sion,” SEud Havens, a father of four who has four grandchil dren. “That’s what’s so great about computers,” he said. “Kids are turned on by the sights and sounds and interactivity of it aU on the screen, just like TV, Vandross to sing national anthem THE ASSOCIATED PRESS NEW ORLEANS - R&B super- star Luther Vandross will perform the national anthem at Super Bowl XXXI, the NFL announced Monday.
