6A NEWS/ The Charlotte Post Thursday, January 30,1997 Don’t sell King THE ASSOCIATED PRESS ATLANTA - A biographer of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. says the civil rights leader did not embrace leadership of the movement to gain fame or money, and his legacy should King not be commercialized. During a worship service in King’s honor Sunday at Emory University, author David J. Garrow said King went about the task of pro moting freedom and equality for all with no thoughts of self-promotion. “The unique thing is he did not set out to become a celebrity,” said Garrow, author of the Pulitzer Prize winning “Bearing the Cross: Martin Luther King and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.” “He was very reluctant, almost dragged into that role by his friends in Montgomery, Ala., in 1955-56. He desired to be a father, husband and per haps college teacher.” Garrow, a visiting professor in Emory's law school, made the comments to underscore his reservations about a recent lucrative deal between Time Warner Inc. and King's estate to publish new books and other products related to King’s speeches and writings. It is to easy in this age for people’s legacies to become trivialized and distorted by a culture that is fundamentally commercial, Garrow said. The issues surrounding King’s legacy should not be legal or commercial ones, Garrow said. Drawing from King’s own words, he said, “King’s message and legacy to all of us is that we should indeed strive to have a life, not a living.” 1,000 man march Continued from page 1A “others are asked to follow in support.” “The march wiU also kick off a campaign of love in the black community,” Barnett said. “Young black men will be asked to puU up their pants, hold their heads high and become keepers of their commimity. They will be asked to greet every brother they meet with ‘brother.’ To pledge to be drug and violence free during the month of Februaiy. To join the campaign to ‘Stop The Killing’ or some organization in the Hack com munity for one year.” “The message is there are far more good black men than there are bad,” Barnett said. “For too long the media has shown the negatives in our community.” Tell Them You Love Them In ’®l)e Cljarlotte ^o£(t Place Your Cupid’s Message to: • Secret Admirers • Husbands/Wives ■ Children ■ Wanna-Be's Only $15.95 & $24.95 Call one of our Profesaonals: LaVeme, Stqtai, Rat, Jed, Bob or Fran Today!
