7A NEWSmie Charlotte Post Thiursday, January 30,1997 MOBILE VIDEO RECORDERS CAMPAIGN Dear Charlotte Post Readers: We represent a group of African-American citizens who have launched a campaign to put mobile video recorders in police cars. Our goal is to raise enough money from the African-American community to purchase video cameras to be placed in the first 25 police cars. We need your financial support to help reach our goal. Our hope is that everyone in Charlotte - businesses, individuals and organizations - will join this campaign so that eventually video cameras will be installed m all police cars. We initiated this effort because it is a positive way to help deal with the pain of the recent shooting of James Willie Cooper and to provide an opportunity for the African-American community to help itself Mr. Cooper was another in a number of unarmed black motorist killed by a police officer. We feel that the video cameras will provide protection for both police officers and citizens. This effort has a broad base of support and will help build trust between the police department and the African-American community. Charlotte has a history of working through it problems in a positive manner. The entire country has heard about our new effort. Our city is described as a city of hope and optimism, where people take pride in working together to create opportunities and solve problems. Installing video cameras is not the only answer to this problem, but it’s one step toward making positive change. With your financial support we all can make a difference.
