Charlotte Alumnae Chapter, announce its annual Spring Cotillion. Young women who are seniors in high school, with academic achievement, possess leadership abilities and are involved in their school and community are chosen via a competitive selection process. Through a series of workshops that stress personal development, self-confidence and, family values, young women make the transition from high school to college, while competing for scholarship money. This year's theme is “I Believe I Can Fly.” The culmination of these events is the presentation of these 36 women at a formal “cotillion” ball. Now in its 33rd year, the cotillion is one of the sorority’s longest running community service projects. Highlights of the ball include a choreographed segment where debutantes waltz with their fathers and the awaited crowning of “Ms. Debutante.” The cotillion is scheduled for Saturday April 5, 1997 7:00 p.m. at The Grady Cole Center, 310 N. Kings Drive. Admission to the event is free and the public is invited. Founded in 1913 at Howard University in Washington, D.C., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is one of the nation’s oldest sororities. A non-profit organization, the sorority has over 185,000 members in the United States, Africa, Japan, Korea and the Caribbean. The Charlotte Alumnae Chapter was founded in 1942. Comprised of professional college-educated women, its thrust is on public service, i.e. Habitat for Humanity, ADACE (alcohol, drug abuse, AIDS, and community education) and voter registration/education to name a few.
