4B SPORTS/The Charlotte Post Thursday, April 17 1997 l^!> Mattox Yadkin 2A player of year By Brian Powe FOR THE CHARLOTTE POST SALISBURY - Ryan Mattox, the heralded hoopster from West Rowan High School, was recent ly voted as the player of the year by Yadkin Valley 2A Basketball ofBcials. Mattox, who led the Falcons to their first 2A state champi onship in over a decade, was regarded as one of Rowan County’s best players last sea son. In the championship game, the 6 foot, 3 inch Senior posted nine points and six rebounds in West Rowan’s 79-67 victory over WaUace-Rose HiU at the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill. The power forward averaged 12 points a game during the 1997 campaign, scoring nearly 400 points in 29 games. Mattox is contemplating whether to attend Winston- Salem State, Chowan Jrmior CoUege, or Northland Pioneer Junior College in Holbrook, Ariz. for collegiate basketball. West coach Bob Shipwash said that Mattox is deserving of his honors and achievements. “He’s been to everything that we’ve had in the past three years. Even if he has been sick, he came and sat on the sidelines. He’s really dedicated to the game and has worked to make himself better.” Falcons sophomore guard Bryson Goodlett joined Mattox on the 2A Yadkin Valley team. Other Rowan County athletes making this year’s all-star team include: North Rowan’s J.R. Black, and Salisbury High’s Leonard Owens. The rest of the All-Yadkin Valley 2A team consist of: West Montgomer’s Corey Pemberton and Lamont Young; North Stanly’s Quentin Bryant, Eric Jackson, and Correy Watkins; and West Starriys Daniel Griffin and Sherman Greer.
