wm 7A NEWS/The Charlotte Post Thursday, May 1, 1997 WE'RE THE WORLD'S a 3 LARGEST RECYCLER. so WHY DO WE OPPOSE THE COUNTY'S DRAFT RECYCLING PLAN? It’s tough enough to run a successful business. Now Mecklenburg County could make it even harder. PROPOSED LAW HITS BUSINESS HARD The County is proposing a mandatory commercial waste recycling program that — in I 8 months — will hit every restaurant, and every building I 0,000 square feet and up, from your average neighborhood grocer to Uptown office towers. One year later, all other buildings will follow suit. The County will charge a $2-per-ton tax on waste, under a new franchise plan for commercial haulers. The tax alone will cause disposal costs to jump 6.5 percent. Let alone the added expense to businesses of sorting glass, paper, cardboard and more. Storing it on-sice in separate bins. And paying a hauler to collect and process it. RECYCLING AT RISK Recycling is a terrific way to reduce the waste stream and recover needed resources. But as the world’s largest recycler, we’ve learned from experience that recycling has to make sense. Recycle materials that are marketable. Not ones that cost more used than new. Because forcing businesses to lose money every month collecting and processing materials of little economic or environmental value will ultimately undermine support for recycling at ail. And that would be a shame. MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD The proposed plan isn’t final — yet. But you have to act quickly to keep reason in recycling in Mecklenburg County. Let’s work with County officials to develop a new, sustainable approach to commercial solid waste reduction. Call 394-1 353 ext 3280 for more information.
