Juggling family and career

reflection of the increased

to them.
Amy Caizza, study director
for the Institute for Women’s
Policy Research, a
Washington think tank, said
society’s attitudes about
childless women also have
changed.
“Economic reasons are part
of it, but it’s also the effect of
the women’s movement, that
you don’t have to be a mother
to be a complete woman,” she
said.
Just over half of Asian
women were childless, the
highest rate among race and
ethnic groups. It was 46 per
cent for non-Hispanic whites,
39 percent for blacks and 36
percent for Hispanics.
Government researchers,
academics and the National
Campaign to Prevent Teen
Pregnancy, an advocacy
group, said they considered
NCHS birth data more accu
rate because it is based on
official vital records from hos
pitals.
The census report was
based on a survey of 50,000
homes. More information on
this survey can be found at

In the new study, women
who exercised actively when
they were young — either
dancing, or in team sports, or
just walking a lot — and who
maintained a healthful
weight - that is, they were
not obese — through the age of
21, were somewhat protected
from breast cancer, said
Mary-Claire King, first
author of the study and a pro
fessor of genome sciences at
the University of
Washington, Seattle.
“If they carried the muta
tion, they still had a very high
risk, but their age of diagno
sis was pushed to later in
life,” she said.
Earlier studies had sug
gested that women with the
gene mutations have a risk
ranging from 25 percent to 80
percent of developing breast
cancer in their lives.
Brothers celebrate their special talents
goth Taylor, age 12
Tyquante, age 10 live
an active life. They like
swimming, skating, play
ing video games and
watching cartoons. On
this special day they take
time out to just hang
together.
Today, we honor and
celebrate the lives of
these handsome brothers
and recognize their spe
cial talents, which
include drawing and
singing. Both Taylor and
Tyquante are also avid
readers.
Taylor’s favorite series
of books is Harry Potter
and Tyquante’s favorite
book is Curious George.
Taylor and Tyquante are two of many children waiting
to be adopted in Mecklenburg County.
'Taylor's most endear
ing qualities are his smile
and his witty behavior,”
says long-time friend
Christine
O’Brien,
‘Tyquante
has a sparkle
not only in his eye but
also in his heart. He is
very sweet and lovable.”
One thing both boys
share in common is their
desire for an adoptive
family. Taylor and
Tyquante live in foster
care. They have never
lived apart and want to be
adopted into the same
family. If you are inter
