Morrison, 68, sold his Allstate office to already to his daughter aJfler 35 years with the insurer. He was the first African American agent to work for Allstate in North Carolina when he was hired in 1969. He started his own fi*anchise in 1994 and was inducted into the insurer’s Hall of Fame, one of 59 per sons nationally to be so hon ored. • Simone Dewalt has been named an All-American Scholar by the United States Achievement Academy. Simone, a student at Garinger High School, will appear in the All-American Scholars Yearbook, a nation al publication. The scholars are selected by the academy based on the recommenda tion of teachers, coaches, counselors and other spon sors. • Howard McClure has been included in a couple of biogi-aphical publications. McClure appears in th the 34th edition of Who’s Who in Finance and Business and One Thousand Great Americans — 2004. McClure’s biography will be one of more than 20,000 to appear in the Who’s Who, which chronicles leaders in finance and business. McClure, 44, is a member of the Charlotte- Mecklenburg Community Relations Committee and N.C. Black Leadership Caucus as well as first vice chair in the Mecklenburg Democratic Party. • The Charlotte chapter of The Links sponsored the Gift of Life art contest emphasizing organ dona tion. The contest was open to all fourth-graders at Ashley Park Elementary, Community Charter, Sugar Creek Charter and Trinity Episcopal schools. Stefan LaCaria of Community Charter finished first; Scott Allen (Community Charter) was second; Taylor Wolfe (Trinity Episcopal) was third. • Two Butler High School students won the N.C. History Day competition in Raleigh last month. Amy Scheide and Elizabeth Christenson won for their entry “Vernacular Wordsmiths,” which earned them a trip to the National History Day contest in College Park, Md., in June. Jay M. Robinson High won in the Great DepressionAVorld War II era contest for the entry “Dorothea Lange: Photographer of the Depression.” • Davidson IB Middle School raised $2,200 to elim inate the threat of land mines around the world. Students and faculty raised the money from a tal ent show and silent auction. Students danced, sang and played instruments in addi tion to comedy sketches. A check was sent to Landmine Survivors Network, a Washington organization that helps mine victims and their families reclaim their lives. • Nicole DeVillers has been named interim director of the newly established Institute for Social Capital at UNC Charlotte. The institute is a collabora tive effort between UNCC and local non-profits, gov ernmental agencies and community based organiza tions to provide feedback on funding initiatives. • The Charlotte- Mecklenburg Black Political Caucus will meet Sunday at ’’Memorial Presbyterian Church, 2600 Beatties Ford Road.
