8A ##o NEWS^e Clsrlont $ot Thursday, December 15, 2005 PEOPLE OF NOTE Blount studies in Next Gen for gifted, talented students Blount Jonathan Blount of Concord is a partici pant in the Next Generation Venture Fund for supporting gifted and tal ented students from imderrep- resented neighborhoods. Blovmt, who aspires to become a professional basketball player and ophthalmologist, is a sophomore at Jay M. Robinson High School where he is a honor student and member of the junior varsity basketball team. In the seventh grade, Jonathan was recruit ed by Duke University to participate in their Thlent Identification Program based on his SAT scores and academic achievement The following summer Jonathan attended his first summer camp at the University of Kansas. In eighth grade, Jonathan earned an $18,000 NGVF scholarship to help him maintain his academic standing. The fimd provides an aca demic advisor fiom Duke who designs an individual education plan, two three-week summer programs held on imiversity cam puses, mentoring through the National Foundation for Tfeaching Blntrepreneurship. He also takes distance education courses in mathematics or science (through Johns Hopkins, Stanford, or Duke), a PSAT and SAT preparation course, college counseling, and periodic career and leadership programs. • Calvin Miuphy has been named presi dent of the N.C. Bar. Murphy, named to the position in October, was chair of the Disciplinary Review Committee, which examines the Bar’s disci plinary process. The panel issued a report in July that recommended changes in rules and procedures for handling high-profile discipli nary matters. Hendircks Mmphy, a graduate of Davidson College and N.C. Central Law School, is a criminal defense attorney • Denisha L. Hendricks PhD has been named senior woman administrator at Johnson C. Smith University. ‘Tm excited about the opportunities at JCSU and all they have to offer. I’m happy to be working with one of the most prestigious HBCUs in the country, and to lend a helping hand to ensure JCSU will always be number one in academics, athletics and service.” Hendricks, who is also JCSUs health and human per formance coordinator, will serve on the senior manage ment team and assist with the administration and governance of the depart ment of athletics. She comes to JCSU finm Livingstone College, where she served in the same capacity and was dean of the Academic \Tllage. “We are very pleased that Dr. Hendricks is joining the athletic department staff,” said Dorotiiy CowserYancy PhD., president. “Her varied sports background as well as her expe rience in the University of South Carolina and Auburn University athletics departments make her well suited for the duties she will be undertaking.” • Calvin Davis has been named United States Tfennis Association/North Carolina’s high school tennis coach of the year. Davis, who has coached at Charlotte Coimtry Day School for 16 years, has won 25 N.C. independent school state championships and was head coach of the Southern Section Davis Cup team.
