Payton. Tuesday named five-time Division II national championship assistant coach and former Temple University Offensive Coordinator Willie J. Slater as the Goiden Tigers’ new head football coach. Though the new coach spent the last two seasons «in Philadelphia with the Temple Owls under his former University of North Alabama coach, Bobby Wallace, he is no stranger to making winners out of Alabama teams. Slater. 49. holds five Division II national champi onship rings from his work at jhe University of North Alabama and Troy University. He is also a five-time NCAA Assistant Coach of the Year recipient, and helped coach the Jacksonville State Gamecocks to the 2003 Ohio Valley Conference title with a 7-1 (84 over all) record. "Coach Slater is a proven winner who believes in recruiting the hard to find best players available and coaching them well," said Payton who made the announcement at a press conference at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center on campus Tuesday morning. "He knows the importance of leaching play ers to be the best they can be athletically and in life. That, coupl^ with his winning record and spirit, makes him the top selection to lead our Golden Tigers’ football team." Slater, who was elevated to offensive coordinator at Temple this season under then head coach Wallace, replaces Rick Comegj’ who resigned after ten success ful years leading Tuskegee to become the head coach at Jackson State. Slater brings 28 years of coaching experience, 24 of them on the collegiate level and 15 of lho.se as an offensive coordinator to his new position. Slater was offensive coordinator at North Alabama under Wallace when that school won three consecutive NCAA Div. II national championships from 1993-95. He won national assistant coach of the year in each of the title seasons. In all.'he spent eight years at North Alabama, six under Wallace. His first full-time position at the collegiate level was at Troy Stale, where he served as running backs coach under Chan Gailey from 1983-84. Gailey is now the head coach at Georgia Tech. In total. Slater spent eight seasons at Troy Slate, also working as quarterbacks and running backs coach. Troy State went to the playoffs three limes during his stay and won NCAA Div. II championships in 1984 and 1987. Slater won national a.ssisiant coach of the year honors in both those title seasons. He began his coaching career as a graduate assis tant at his alma mater. West Alabama, in 1978 and earned his degree in business eduction from the school in 1979. He was a four-year starter at quarterback for West Alabama, then known as Livingston College, and helped the Tigers to a third place finish in the 1975 NCAA Div. II playoffs. He is a native of Coffeville, Al., and a 1974 graduate of Coffeeville (Ala.) High School, where he was a prep All-America quarterback and the Class lA State .Most Valuable Playei. Hal Jackson, former sports editor of the Washington iDC) Afro-American Newspaper, is being honored for his service to the CIAA Basketball Toumament. dating back to its inauguial year al Turner Arena in Washington. DC. Jackson was the radio promoter for the first idumamenl, and also sened as announcer while it was in Washington. This former owner of Ihe Washington Bears, a black pro fessional basketball team that went 66-0 in 1942-43, was one of the first advocates for broadcasting black college bowl games on major networks. JacLson has been on Ihe radio since the late 30's and currently senses as host and executive producer of "Sunday Classics" on New York's 107.,S, WBLS. Winston-Salem Stale I'niversity's William "Bill" English will join this class as the ClAA's single-game scoring record-holder with 77 points against Fayetteville State. A member of Ihe WSSU Hall of Fame and two- time All-America selection in 1968 and 1969 and all- C1AA and all-N AlA, this high scorer (2.113 points) ranks in WSSU's history books in categories including scoring, free throws. Field goals made and rebounding. Pro Football Hall of Famer Art Shell played both football and basketball al Maryland Eastern Shore, then known as Manland State, and went on to become the JACKSON SHELL first African-American head coach in the NFL's modem era when he was head coach of Ihe Oakland Raiders from 1989-1994. Drafted out of Maryland Stale, Shell had an outstanding career with the Raiders as an offen sive tackle from 1968-1982. After his playing career. Art became the,Raiders' offensive line coach from 1983- ,1989. Since 2002, Shell has worked for the National Football League supervising all NFL football operations and development. Mike Davis, an elite basketball star from Virginia Union University, spent three seasons with the Panthers. As VUU's all-time leading scorer with 2,758 points, Davis received all-conference honors each of his three years and was named the 1969 CIAA Player of the Year. He is Ihe second all-time leading scorer in the CIAA. second only to WSSU's Earl Monroe. Sandra Shuler, women's Coordinator for North Carolina Central University from 1974-1980 was a pioneer by developing the championship format for CIAA volleyball, in 1973 she coordinated NCCU's tran sition from women's sports governed under the Women's Athletics Association to intercollegiate athletics. The following year she organized and coached the first NCCU intercollegiate volleyball team. She also did the same for softball at NCCU. She is the author of two books on intercollegiate athletics and has also written a history of NCCU’s Physical Education and Recreation Department from 1937-1985.
