most think of the post-season
taking place on the football
field, former Steelers wide-
receiver Lynn Swann hopes to
re-define the term. Instead of
providing tele
vision com
mentary on
football,
' Swann contin-
ues his quest to
secure the
Republican

be the
Keystone State’s next gover
nor.
The Sewickley Heights resi
dent has faced tou^ oppo
nents on the gridiron, but the
opposition in this battle will
be the hearts and minda of a
black constituency that
knows little of his exploits
beyond sports. But that hasn’t
deterred him fix>m the chal
lenge.
Swann’s campaign is very
much an atypical black cam
paign - to date, he has not
made direct or specific
appeals to the Afiican-
American (ximmunity
In a phone interview last
month, Swann was asked
how his campaign would ben
efit Afiican-Americans and
why he was running as a
Republican. He replied, “It’s
important that people under
stand that real fi'eedom
comes fixDm options and choic
es, not only one direction.”
The benefits of his vision of
leadership for Pennsjdvania,
Swann says include “an equal
playing field for ev^yone and
every business, better quality
education for all
Pennsjdvanians, family sta
bility and re-structured prop
erty and business taxes.”
Swann also pointed out his
msmherships in the Urban
League and Sigma Pi Phi
Fraternity along with his life
NAACP membership. He’s
especially proud of the men
toring work he’s done with
Big Brothers/Big Asters.
Ihe Hall of Famer has been
floating the idea of a candida
cy for a number of months
and he’s done it his way -
without going through the
usual hoops and barrels of
most Black candidates. That
may be the reason the first-
time candidate has crossed a
significant hurdle in his
week-old candidacy
After state Senator Jeffiey
Piccola of Dauphin bowed out,
Swann went on to score a fig
urative toudidown, winning a
regional state caucus of cen
tral counties. He garnered 77
votes, his nearest opponent,
former Lt. Gov. William
Scranton got 32 votes.
