LONGVIEW, Tfexas—Hip-hop isn’t just a dance stjie, and
several Longview residents are learning new ways to tap into
the lifestyle one leg. hip and arm move at a time.
“Hip-hop is kind of like rock ‘n’ roll and rap mixed together,”
young music enthusiast Chase Barnette said.
Gyrating his hips and thrusting his upper and lower body for
ward in unison, 9-year-old Chase—like the 24 other children
and adults taking a class at the Broughton Recreation
Center—intertwined several dance st>ies to create moves all
his own.
“You gotta be smooth with it,” dance instructor Kristi Candler
urged her young students
Tbaching people of any age to twist and maneuver their bod
ies in a way they aren’t used to proved difficult, especially with
the children.
During the first children’s class last month, Candler tried to
teach eight children to stylishly stride up and down the dance
floor, swinging their arms “smoothly” at their sides while
sashaying back and forth on the hardwood floor.
Most of the children, ages 5 to 11, walked as if they had been
ir\jured, leaning heavily on one leg. With each stride, they
became more offbalance, almost falling.
Candler stood back and smiled.
“I love teaching hip-hop classes,” the 27-year-old instructor
said. “It’s ftm and it’s funny”
Hip-hop music, as well as the culture, has become very popu
lar, she said. And althou^ hip-hop has been associated with
black culture, Candler said, ‘It’s not a white or black thing. It’s
universal.”
All types of people love hip-hop, Candler said.
“Hip-hop is a culture, it’s not just a dance,” she said. “It’s
clothes. It’s an attitude. It’s whatever you make of it,”
While Candler’s students couldn’t immediately make much of
their instructor’s quick and sharp movements, they did make
the best of the one hour a week, monthlong course. Partners in
Prevention organized the children’s class; tlie adult class is put
oil by the city’s Parks and Recreation Department
