The Web site of the 4-year-old Southern Baptist church includes a cartoon proclaim ing “God said it, that settles it!” Less than a mile away, the graying worshippers at The First Baptist Church in America prefer Bach to bon gos, listen to a black-robed minister who quotes Winston Churchill and meet in a white-steepled National His toric Landmark. First Baptist’s historic con gregation planted the faith in America, where 30 million people now call themselves Baptist. But in the move ment’s birthplace of Rhode Island, just over 2 percent of the population is Baptist, and some of its eariiest churches are strug^ing. Southern Baptist churches like Grace Harbor have emei^ed as the higher-profile public face of the tradition— which has evolved to become fai' more conservative than the church’s roots in a liberal blue state would suggest. Most Baptist factions trace their roots to Roger Williams, the 17th-century minister who founded Rhode Island and orgpnized the nation's first Baptist congregation in 1638. The uncompromising provocateur was banished from Massachusetts for attacking state-sponsored Puritan congi'egations, demanding the separation of church and state and arguing that American Indians had property rights. Williams was fiercely com mitted to what he called “soul fi*eedom”—or fieedom of reli gion. Just months after orga nizing the first Baptist con gregation, he left it and reject ed the institutional church altogether. Williams said he had a “restless unsatisfiedness” in his soul, and one of liis con temporary critics called him “constant only in his incon stancy” Scholars say those attiibutes continue to mark the faith today “Wherever two or tlmee Baptists are gathered togeth- ei‘, there’s a schism,” said J. Stanley Lemons, the First Baptist church historian. Once confined to tlie South, the denomination spread noith duiing the 20tli centiuy and claims 16.4 mil lion members, making it tlie nation’s largest Protestant denomination. Eric Kehn, a spokesman for the federal Alcohol, Tbbacco, Firearms and Explosives agency, said the assessment was based on witness reports and behavioral profilers. “They’re not youths or teens. It’s probably someone in theii* 20s or 30s. We believe they’re pretty much inseparable. They’re something like bosom buddies,” he said. The Prophet’s Column, Inc. 9626 Feldbank Drive Charlotte, NC 28216-2131 The Saddest Day In All The World - Part I J.M. Little, Teacher Friends, for your soul’s sake and your family, will you pay attention for eternity? This is the beloved Apostle John writing here under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. John said he saw a great white throne. And Him that sat on it. This is an eternal scene. John pictures God on His Throne. What a majestic Throne. I can’t describe it in words. God is holy and righteous. He is omnipotent. Being Almighty, He has declared in His Word that this Judgment is to take place. And it will take place, whether you believe it or not. In my unregenerate state, when I was in the religious world, I tried to convince myself that this judgment would not take place. Praise the Lord He did not leave me there. If He had left me there, I would have to go to this Judgment as a lost man. But under the Blood, I’ll be present at this Judgment as a saint of God. How will you go to this judgment? John went on to say: “...from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away; and there was found no place for them.” (Vs.11) There are three heavens: the first is the space immediately above the earth, which extends about 25 miles up. Then the second heaven, from that distance into outer space, which extends up to the third heaven, where God dwells on His Throne. Note closely that John said: “...the earth and the heaven...”, meaning this earth you and I live on, and the space immediately above it that extends up to outer space. So you need not fear that the third heaven will be done away with. In other words, this earth you and I walk on every day will be destroyed. Where will you be then, my friends? Praise the Lord, at this day and time I’ll have the Bosom of my Lord to lay my head on, but only by His grace. I began this study somewhat after two o’clock in the morning. This is while the multitudes of you were asleep. I am awake in the early hours of the morning crying unto my Lord for lost souls. And the Lord dealing with my heart about many things. Jfirst iilt.
