GREENSBORO-Nearly
49 years of silence will end
next month for Josephine
Bfjyd Bradley, who endured
racial slurs, mean looks and
an (xrasional egg thrown her
way after she became tlie
first black student to attend
what is now Grinisley High
Scliool.
The school plans a two-day
ce?remMiy begiiming March
30 to tliank Bradley for her
courage and perseverance
and to a|)ologize for the difti-
culties she encountered at
what was then called
Greensboro High School.
Bradley transferred to tlie
scluxtl in 1957 - tliree years
after tlie U.S. Supreme Court
outlawed school segregation
— for her senior year in part
l)ecau8e it was closer to her
home. She went on to make
the school’s honor roll and go
on to college.
She earned a doctorate
after writing a dissertation
on her hi^-school experience
and is now a [»x)fessor of
African-American studies at
Claris Atlanta University
Grimsley High School will
honor Bradley with a portrait
and a plaque located in the
campus’ main building. The
school also will hold a sympo
sium and Bradley will meet
with ninth-graders.
Greensboro officials will pre
sent her with the key to the
city
