It is inseparable from the American experience. The Freedom Monument Project brings North Carolinians together to share the stories of our families and our communities, and develop a vision for honoring the African American experience in our state through a work of public art. It’s about ART It’s about HISTORY Public art has unique importance in declaring our shared values, and in affirming our commit ment to one another. Common areas belong to all of us, and we can use them creatively, through the arts, to make North Carolina an even better, more inclusive place. S ' The symbols of our state ■ history are concentrated [ in the capital area of Raleigh. Monuments there include a number of * memorials to the bravery I jand sacrifices of North Carolinians during the Civil War. When these public areas wee being shaped, it was usual to selectively ignore the African American experience, but now we know better. It’s about KDUCATION It’s about THE FUTURE When this project is completed, there will be something new in our capital city - a prominent site where people of all ages, races and back- grounds can see that the Project It’s about TIME African American experience is includ ed and honored in the symbols and cen tral places of our state. This year, 13(),(K)() public sch(H)l children will visit the capital area on history field trips. What they see there will tell them a lot about our ideals. The project is also involving kids in the public conver sation through classriHim programs and specifically-designed curriculum. The African American experience is much more than the story of Emancipation, but isn’t it sad to realize that 138 years after the end of slavery, our state has yet to celebrate Freedom in a public monu ment? Without the contributions of African Americans, famous and unknown, our state would not be the special place it is today. It’s past time for our public art to reflect that reality.
