6B RELIGIOrWe Cgsrlotte Thursday, March 16, 2006 Franklin headlines national Hero Tour Continued from page SB were named one of Ebony magasdne’s 10 hottest couples in the Feburary issue. Since bursting on the gospel music scene in 1993 with his self-titled debut album, “Kirk Franklin & The Family,” Franklin has been accepted and embraced almost by the masses. The debut CD went on to spend 100 weeks at the top of Billboard magazine’s gospel charts, while also crossing over to the R&B side, and becoming in the process the first gospel album ever to sell over a million units. Never defined solely as a gospel artist, Franklin is also responsible for several main stream crossover successes, highlighted by 1995’s multi format smash “Stomp” (per formed by DaLlas/Ft. Worth- based youth choir God’s Prop erty) which garnered airplay on MTV as well as a Song Of The Year nomination and per formance on the 1998 Gram my Awards of “Lean On Me,” a track fium his 1997 release, “The Nu Nation Project,’’which featured guest appearances by the hkes of Mary J Blige, U2’s Bono and R Kelly Always celebrated for weaving seemingly disparate musical influences-R&B, modem rods, hip-hop, pop, jazz, gospel-into a seamless fabric, Franklin is known for creating his own singular style and sound that truly transcends any and all boundaries of genre, race, denomination or social back ground. Reaching young, urban audiences is a key componeait of Franklin’s vision, and the company’s mission statement reflects Franklin’s commit ment: “We’re seeking to cre atively impact the world throu^ the roster of artists and resources with Christ centered, innovative products and services,” he said on his website. The program was created by The Charlotte Rescue Mission to help women overcome dn^ abuse. Dove’s Nest also gives support to homeless women by providing them with shel ter. Williams, a native of Charleston, S.C., works at the Rescue Mission on second shift as a fadhty tedi. ‘Tm like a housemother. I’m responsible for seeing that the ladies follow the guiddines,” she said- “I take them where they need to go and give them their medidne,” Williams said. Working with the women is rewarding for TOUiams. She enjoys giving back what was given to her. ‘Working here keeps me hum ble. I can give the ladies inspi ration. My life chai^d so much with (the Rescue hfis- sion’s) help.” “Our purpose is to help women who are homeless and in need of recovering,” said Charles Sosnik, the mission’s marketing and community relations director. Addicts go to the mission for assistance in the most prob lematic areas of their lives. ‘We help women recuperate mentally, physically, and emo tionally” Sosnik said ‘We’re Christian-based, Therefore, the recovering person is to acknowledge a higher power, Jesus Christ.” Because of the spedal needs of homeless women. Dove’s Nest is ccaistantly in need of patient people who will help addicts get wdl, Sosnik said. “The need is out there. We wish the women’s program was a lot bi^er. Our men’s program has 134 people in it. This has a lot to do with men’s program being in ^dstence since 1938. There are just as many homeless women out there.” Dove’s Nest started 1992. “Come Let Us Worship Together” The Friendliest Church in the City of Charlotte” Pleasant Hill Baptist Church 517 Baldwin Ave. • Charlotte, NC 28204 (704)376-1201 Office -(704) 376-1210 Fax Rev.
