7B RELIGIONAEIe C^rlotte Thursday, March 16, 2006 Rev. Run writes inspiration in ‘Words of Wisdom’ By Victoria Elmore THE CHARLOTTE POST Rev, Run’s (Joseph. Sim mons) purpose in life is to ejrtend his wisdom to hdp people. The ordained minister caught the pubUc’s eye in 1983 as leader of group Run- DMC and is now CEO of Rim Athletics and Phatfarm Footwear. On MIVs most top-rated show, “Run’s House,” Run shares his wis dom with the world- The quotes in the minister’s Simmons 1 book, “Words of J Wisdom” begin I as simple mom- n ing messages to I people close to '1 him. “It started as prayots to fam ily and Mends, then they would send them to people they knew,” Simmons said. He said the extension grew larger and more celebri ties such as Kid Eock and Gabridle Union amongst oth ers began inquiring about his daily wisdom words. After sending his insight to so many people, including radio broadcast, celebrities, viewers of his TV show, and close family members, they began encouraging Simmons to write a book. “I was inspired by popular demand. People started approaching me asking me about sharing my prayers,” he said. Simmons said he felt com pelled to write a book of quotes that would lift people’s spirits and give them hope. He sensed that folk were in need of positive optimism. “My job is to help others. We all have an assignment,” he said, “And mine is to help people.” Many messages are enclosed in “Words of Wis dom” but there is one that stands out more than the oth ers. The minister said it’s one of reasons why he wrote the book. “The Bible says that wisdom is the key principle; that’s a good reason for writ ing the book also. You want to have wisdom,” he said. Wisdom is essential in Sim mons’ life. He beheves it is the path through life’s trials. “TOsdom is the knowledge and understanding that God gives us to make navigate through life’s situations,” he said. In “Words of TOsdom” Sim mons speaks of the peace God gives bim ‘T cast my cares on him and lay down at night, and I’m like whatever,” he said. ‘Tt takes practice to understand that God is in control.” Simmons’ daily affirma tions have reached many peo ple arormd the world throu^ his TV show and two-way pager. ‘Words of ^^Tsdom” vriU give him the opportunity to encourage even more people to discover their purpose in life. “Find your passion and you’ll find your money Do what you love and the money win follow,” Simmons quotes his book. Rescue Mission boosts lives ADVERTISEMENT Continued from page 6B “Women have unique issues. Ninety-five percent of them have experienced some type of abuse,” Sosnik said. He said the women go throu^ assessments to deter mine whether they can make it in the real world. “They are evaluated for stability, cogni tive skills, and basic reading to make sure they can read cm a seventh grade level,” Sosnik said. Williams’ life was heading down a dead end road in Charleston, where she lived in the worst conditions. “I lived in a trailer that had no power and electricity” she said. “I was emotionally bankrupt, I thought there was no hope. I believed that God was vexrgeful and pim- ished me for ever37thing.” Wmiams stopped working and became consumed with drug use; that was until she moved to Charlotte and the 'Rescue Nfission provided shelter. ‘T had a housemother and there was a certain time that I had to be in. Every Thurs day we had a meeting where we’d talk to counselors about our day “Williams said. “This gave me a sense of responsi bility” Williams hved at the shelter for six months, then relocated to the YMCA. She later found work at the mission, where she helps inspire others. “Only God can bring you in as an addict, then employer. I went through Habitat for Humanity and got a house,” Williams said. “Charlotte Rescue Mission gave me hope. It helped me reaHze that God is forgiving and that he loves me unconditionally” A look at the Men’s Shelter of the Charlotte Rescue Mission will run next week. Activists arrested at Virginia eoUege THE ASSOCIATED PRESS LYNCHBURG, Va.-More than 20 gay rights activists were arrested on trespassing diarges Friday as they tried to step onto the campus of Liberty University Ihe school founded by the Rev Jerry Fal- weU. Many of the activists were part of Soulforce, a group on its first stop of a nationwide “Equality Ride” tour to pro mote gay ri^ts at the nation’s conservative Christ ian universities and military academies. hivoking the memory of the civil rights movement. Soul- force m^nber Jacob Reitan said: “We want to come to the school today to say, learn fium history”’ “We have a li^t to be here, because this school teaches that bdi^ gay is being sick and sinful,” said Reitan, co director of Equality Ride. ‘We - have a r^t to question and to show how we are children of God.” Reitan and other Sorilforce members said they did not intend to be arrested at the campus, but just hoped to talk to Liberty students. Some 60 people, including 35 members of the Equality Ride bus tour, gatiiered for the late morning rally on a sidewalk outside the school’s main entrance. A music group played guitare and sang 1960s peace songs. Several Liberty students spoke to the Soulforce mem bers. But the group didn’t always find support. Comparing homosexuals to drug users and adulterers, Liberty senior Ttay Faulkner sedd the university disap proves of any alternative lifestjie. ‘T know you guys don’t think it’s a sin,” he said. ‘We do.” Campus police charged all of those arrested with tres passing, and two faced addi tional charges of inciting tres passing. Little, Teacher Are you in Christ? You cannot afford to go to this judgment lost, John said the dead, small and great, stood before God. What is your standing before God now? You are either in Christ, or in Satan, You are either under wrath or under grace. Each day of my life I thank my Heavenly Father tor placing me under grace, I stand amazed over God saving me by His grace, A hell-deserving sinner like me. I’m just an old sinner saved by the grace of God, I didn’t say I accepted Jesus as my Saviour, No, the Lord Jesus does not stand before you to accept or reject Him. You stand before Him for Him to save you or damn your poor soul in Hell. He is the Potter, and we are the clay. He can make a vessel of honor or dishonor. He has mercy on whom He pleases, and He hardens whom He pleases. He is Sovereign! Let’s look again at our text: “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: AND THE DEAD WERE JUDGED OUT OF THOSE THINGS WHICH WERE WRITTEN IN THE BOOKS, ACCORDING TO THEIR WORKS.” (Rev. 20:12) As the Lord gives me grace, I want to look closely at the great truths set forth here. If you are saved, pray for me. The beloved Apostle John saw the dead, small and great, stand before God, That means that all, no matter their position on earth, presidents, governors, judges. Congressmen, street sweepers, blue collar workers, peanut farmers, all, shall stand before the Judge of the Universe to be tried for the things recorded in the books. Those books contain everything you thought, said, and committed while on the earth during your earthly life here. 1 Greater Providence Baptist Church 2000 MUton Road, Charlotte, NC 28215 704-532-6228 704-532-7568fax "Experiencing God Day hy Day” St. John 17:3 Come Join Us in Worship & Praise!
