Late to file? Don’t worry - or procrastinate

“If lliey miss the deadline
they would simply file a late
return or you can file an
extension, however the exten
sion is only to extend the time
to file the return,” Norwood
said- “If you think you’re
going to owe you need to send
the money with the applica
tion for the extension because
it does not extend the time to
pay, still you can ertend the
time to get your paperwork
together.”
The extension deadline is
somethit^ that the govern
ment has changed for 2005
late filers-
“The extoision of time this
year is going to buy them
until Oct-15 which is the first
year for the Federal to do
this, because normally it’s
been Aug- 15,” Norwocd said.
Late filers need to be aware
of their obligations to the
state as weU, especially when
individuals know they are
going to owe taxes to the
state.
“They will hit you with a 10
percent penalty for not pay
ing on time if you don’t send
any money” Norwood said.
“So certainly try to pay the
state with anything you
anticipate to do.”

to Sudan’s Darfur conflict
have resumed direct nego
tiations following a week
end meeting with Afiican
Union leaders, officials said
Monday
The Sudanese govern
ment and Darfur rebels are
talking directly to each
other for the first time
since January, Afiican
Union spokesman
Nureiddine Mezni said.
The two groups spent the
past few months meeting
separatdy with negotiators
in the capital of the west
Afiican coimtry
Denis Sassou-Nguesso,
Republic of Coi^o’s presi
dent and current head of
the 53-nation African
Union, had teamed up with
Nigerian President
Olusegun Obasanjo to urge
Sudanese Vice President
Ali Osman Taha and rebel
leaders toyvard a resolution
of more than three years of
conflict.
“The parties agreed to
negotiate directly,” said
Mezni. “We are encourag
ing them to do so; it’s really
positive.”
More than 180,000 peo
ple have died in the civil
war in western Sudan,
with millions more forced
fix)m their homes. Seven
rounds of talks in Abuja
since August 2004 have yet
to yield a breakthrou^ to
end the fighting.
The decision to negotiate
directly could result in Uie
signing of a new cease-fire
proposed by mediators “in
the coming days” and lead
to the conclusion of a peace
agreement, an Afncan
Union statement cited
Sassou-Nguesso as saying.
The statement said-
Sassou-Nguesso asked
mediators to quicken the
preparation of a draft
agreement settling differ
ences on the key issues of
how to share power and
resources and maintain
security in postwar Darfur.
Decades of low-level trib
al clashes over land and
water in Darfur erupted
into large-scale violence in
early 2003 when some eth
nic groups took up arms,
accusing the east Afiican
nation’s Arab-dominated
central government of
ne^ect.
The central government
is accused of responding by
unleashing Arab tribal
militias known as
Janjaweed to murder and
rape civilians and lay
waste to villages. Sudan
denies backing the
Janjaweed.
