6B RELIGIOt'me Charlotte $o«t Thursday. June 1, 2006 Burden is always on us to do the right thing Continued from page 6B the poor. This is what the Messiah Himsdf would one day do (see Psahns 72:4). One day a King who is the Decid er of the helpless will estab lish His ri^teous reign (see Proverbs 23:10-11). .How easy it is to just look away when injustice is done. That is why Lemuel’s mother urged him again to speak up for the right. He was to take up the role of both judge and advocate for the downtrod den. Cases foV judgment would often be brov^t before a king (see 1 Kings 3:16-28). Lemuel was urged to show no favoritism if there was a dis pute between a rich person and a poor person; and yet he was also to take up the cause ofthe poorto plead for them-if the situation called for it. 3. Why is it important that Proverbs ends with the pas sage on the virtuous woman? It is appropriate that the book of Proverbs ends with this passage because it begins with wisdom, personified as a woman cryii^ out for follow ers (see 1:20-23). Arecurrir^ theme, of the book is the heartache cause by sinful women (see 7:26-27; 21:9). In chapter 31 we have the virtu al embodiment of wisdom and godliness We can all learn much from her example. The woman referred to is, more specifically a wife. This is one of the many places in which the Bible calls atten tion to the importance of the family A bad marriage can be a source ef great trouble (see 21:9); but when a union is blessed by godly people, its rewards are many There are people who would trade many riches for peace and harmony in their homes. THE WORTH OF A GODLY WOMAN-Proverbs 31:10-14. 4. What does it mean that the husband of a virtuous woman has “no lack of gain” (v. ID? Because of the virtuous wife’s diligence in support of her family, such a man pos sesses everything of value that he needs. Therefore, as the King James translators put it, he has “no need of spoil,” or “no lack of gain” of the treasures found in the plunder of war. Some people brir^ nothing but heartbreak to the people who love them. Their poor decisions and errant conduct damage their families. The blessed husband need not fear any of this finm the virtuous wife. She does not bring evil into her family but rather great good. And it is a good ness that will not end this side of heaven but wiL continue “all the days of her hfe” (vs. 12). 5. What is perhaps the most striking characteristic of the godly woman? The most striking feature in the description of the virtuous wife is how hardworking she is. The description of her labor begins by noting that she “seeks,” or selects,' wool and flax. Implied here is that good ju(%ment is called for in pick- ir^ the right raw materials. The women of ancient times had no shopping malls in which to buy their family’s clothing. Most women had to make it themselves. The godly woman showed her love for her family by taking care in the materials she chose. She then went about making the clothing with great indus try She was not afi’aid to do manual labor, even goit^ so far as to make dothii^ to sell for her fajnily’s benefit (see v 24). 6: How is what the godly woman does a reflection of who she is? What the godly woman does is a reflection of who she is. Much has been made about the clothing she makes, including what she makes for herself (see v 22). But, her most important clothing is the sti’er^th that adorns her char acter. The Apostle Pet^ instructs the men among us to treat our wives with consideration as “the weaker vessel” (see 1 Peter 3:7). But, fiom Proverbs we gather that this weakness does not refer to weakness of spirit or resolve! Because of her diligence, this woman is well fortified for any circum stances that may occur. THE ESTEEM FOR A GODLY WOMAN-Proverbs 31:25-30 7. How does the virtuous woman’s speech reveal her To forgive but never forget the eifects of American slavery Continued from page6B pain is eased, Lifehne marchers include Americans, Europeans and Afiicans. There are descen dants of slave trader's and descendants of slaves. Some marchers apologize. Others forgive. They weep. They hug. Michael Lienau catches it all on camera. Another group showed up for the march. These people held signs reading “No More White G'uilt” and ‘White Pride Worldwide.” Jacob, now 14, said he does n’t miderstand their anger. ‘Why are they so mad at us just for asking forgiveness?’ he said. “What harm can be done?” The Lienau children attend school at the family’s kitchen table. The Lifeline journeys are part of the children’s educa- godfiness? Additional evidence of the virtuous woman’s character is her godly speech. A hall mark of her words is wisdom. When such a woman opens her mouth, listeners can be confident that they will not hear foolishness. She will say things that accord wifli the way God has made the world and the way we are supposed to live in it. Because she speaks wisely, her words will benefit her lis teners. She wfil instruct peo ple in the way they should live because she desires their welfare. Her husband and children will benefit fiom her counsel, and so will everyone in her circle of acquaintances who is wise enou^ to listen. 8. What is the Taw of kind ness” (v. 26) the godly woman follows? The godly woman’s words reflect “the law of kindness” tion, Shari Lienau said. History textbooks often gloss over issues such as slav ery, she said. ‘We want to be able to learn history accurately,” she said. ‘We don’t fixus on the atroci ties, but we learn about what Come Share the Vision and Share the Journey Sunday Worship Services 8:00 am and 10:45 am Sunday School 9:30 am Reeder Memorial Baptist Church 3725 Beatties Ford Road Charlotte, North Carolina 28216 www.reederchurch.org First Baptist Church - West 18U1 uaKiawn Ave, ♦ charlotte, INC Z82ib (704) 372-1075 Office • (704) 372-2309 Fax Dr. Ricky A.
