Most churches don’t even have hym nals anymore, and the hymnal used to be sec ond only to the Bible in black churches.” The roots of African-American church music date back to the 17th century, when slaves would repeat, in call-and-response fashion, hymns and songs sung by service leaders. Slaves used the same musical patterns in plan tation fields, and that music evolved into spiri tuals, popularized in large part hy the Jubilee Singers at Fisk University in the late 19th cen tury. Gospel music sprang from that tradition in the 1920s. Anthems, spirituals and hymns—songs such as “This Little Light of Mine,” ‘Walk With Me” and “Oh, the Blood of Jesus”—have been sung in black churches since then. Scandrick said the songs had provided a bedrock of strength and faith during trying times for African-Americans—through the years of Jim Crow, desegregation and the civil rights movement. But in the past two decades, a thriving indus try of contemporary African-American Christ ian music has emerged, and churches hke the Bom Again Church in north Nashville are embracing the new gospel, modem “praise and worship” music and Christian rap and hip-hop at their services. It’s a way to engage young people, to get up and move in the pews and to express the exu berance of God’s love, says Denise Owens, director of worship services at Bom i^ain Church. Little, Teacher Now you hear the Word of God, if you can. Your soul is at stake. Why aren’t you in Hell already? I well remember when I was in high school. The subject of Hell came up. And almost before I knew it, I emphatically said: “Hell means fire!’ And the school teacher, Kenneth, shot back quickly: “You show me in the Bible where Hell means fire! Preachers don’t preach that anymore!" Hold your seats now! I’m going to Jump a creek down here, and if you don’t hold on, you may drown. And if you drown, you may just go on to Hell. I’ll say to any skeptic: “You just wait ‘til you die! You’ll wake up in the very Hell you are denying!" I realize the leading teachers and preachers of our day are denying the reality of Hell. But your denial of God's Hell does not in the least do away with Hell. Now you let that soak in. You think you are so smart in denying Hell. You are a fool! I’ve been accused of being the most hell and damnation teacher who ever lived. So I’m just living up to my reputation. There is a Hell to shun and a Heaven to win. Some of you who say you believe there is a Hell are going to that same Hell. Why? You refuse to repent and come to Christ. Friends, you’ll come clean and come clear with God or go to Hell! Which will you do? It is so sad to see these elderly souls in my family come down to the end of life as you are. You have nothing to live by, and you certainly have nothing to die by. You’ve been in the church all your life and now the hell is coming out of your heart as you approach the grave. Some of you are so full of hatred and bitterness that your loved ones can’t stay in the house with you. What’s on the inside is coming out, Qo you know why you raise so much hell in your home? I’ll tell you why. There is a miniature hell on the backside of your heart, as I pointed out earlier in this study. Your position is: “Well, I haven’t seen that hell.’’ Alright. Will you ask the Lord to show it to you? Are you afraid to ask Him to show it to you? You are going to see that hell on the backside of your heart in this life, or you’ll live with it for the ceaseless ages of eternity!
