ELIZABEra CITY - A lawsuit filed by a former deputy dty
manner alleges he was xmjustly fired in 2003 because he is
black and because of comments he made to the local newspa
per, The Daily Advance.
Reggie Goodson’s suit seeks a jury trial coi claims that city
officials, the majority of whom were white, violated his dvil
rights, broke state personnel laws, vmjustly retaliated against
him and created a hostile work environment for him
Goodson, now an attorney in Raleigh, claims the firing
caused him “severe emotional distress, pain and suffering, fear,
anxiety embarrassment, discomfort and humiliation ” He said
he was entitled to dam^es which weren’t specified.
Goodson said that he received a letter on Sept. 5, 2003, that
said he was fired for talking to the newspaper about dty gov
ernment issues and for problems in the dty’s planning office.
Defendants named in the suit, filed on Sept. SinU.S. District
Court in Raleigh, indude the dty government. City Manager
Rich Olson, and current and former members of the City
Coundl.
Olson said the lawsuit was being handled by an insurance
carrier for the dty and dedined comment.
