6B RELIGION/«Se Clstlotte #o« Thursday, January, 4, 2007 The mind of Christ (Philippians 2:1-5) Continued from page 4B replace it. The word that is translated “strife” (v. 3) is eritheia, and it refers to a selfish kind of ambi-tion that does not include the idea of service for others as part of the moti-vation behind action. It is the kind of self ishness that causes factions and rivalry instead of peace and cooperation. The word “vainglory” means “empty glory” and refers to a conceited opinion of self It is a vain attitude that causes a person to look •down on others because they are viewed as being infeiior. This kind of attitude cannot fulfill the like-mindedness Paul mentioned in verse 2, for it promotes only the self with little or no considera tion for others. “Many people-even Chris- tians-live only to make a good impression on others or to please themselves. But self-centered living, selfish ambition, or conceit brings discord. Paul therefore stressed spiritual unity, ask ing the Philippians to love one another and to be one in spirit and purpose. When we work together, caring for the problems of others as if they were our problems (v. 4), we demonstrate Christ’s exam ple of putting others first, and we experience unity” (Osborne, ed., Life Applica tion Bible Commentary, T^n- dale). The antidote to selfish liv ing is a humble attitude of willingness to consider others better than ourselves. When that is the case, we will not only have concern for our own interests (which is not inher- also have a sincere concern about the interests of those around us. 4. How are we to exhibit the mind of Christ in the way we live (v. 5)? AH of our attitudes should be patterned ‘after the atti tudes of Jesus. This is why it is important to study His fife; that is the only way to \mder- This is a consistent mes sage in Paul’s writings. Ear lier Paul warned the Chris tians in Rome to avoid being “conformed” to the selfish ways of the world. Instead, they were to be “trans formed” by having new minds, minds that were in ]irift with the mind of ently a bad thing), but we will stand what He did. Little, Teacher It was 33 years ago this month that God saved me, And for these decades we've been telling you that the greatest thing in all this world is to know Christ as your Lord and your Saviour. What I have been telling you is a reality to my heart. There is the positive and negative in everything, and we could also say; the opposite in everything. Since salvation in Christ is the greatest blessing that can come to a poor lost, blinded, wretched, and naked sinner, the greatest curse in this life is for God to be silent to a sinner. Have you ever thought about it like that? The Lord God of Heaven does not deal with every sinner for salvation. And in Genesis 6:3 ‘And the LORD said, My Spirit shall not always strive with man_" When I was under Holy Spirit conviction (Jn 16:7-11) I Was afraid the Holy Spirit would leave me. I knew that if He should leave me, I’d never be saved. And let me say in passing: 'no sinner has ever been saved apart from the conviction of sin, and no sinner ever will be saved apart from the conviction of sin.” For those of you who deny the Person and Work of the Holy SfMtit, God has become silent to you.’ You are in the most awful state a sinner could be in. There are no words to describe the awfulness of your case. Let me ask you before going further; ‘are you saved? Do you know Christ as a Living Reality to your heart?” That is the first thing you need to settle. You cannot afford to go out into eternity without Christ. Now, let's look at some examples of God becoming silent to souls when ail hope was gone. And I am not one of those religious leaders who will tell you there is always hope. Oh if you could only hear thus saith the Lord. Give ear to the Word of God if you can. My blessed Lord was on trial before Pilate, the governor. “When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilean, And as soon as he knew that he (Christ) belonged to (king) Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him (Christ) to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time. And when Herod saw Jesus, he (Herod) was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him (Christ) of a long season, because he had heard many ttiings of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him."
