Leadership Charlotte has hired Elizabeth Nye McKee as executive director, effective immediately. The announce ment was made by Paul D. Shipley, president of Leadership Charlotte. McKee McKee is the former direc tor of Leadership Initiatives at McCoIl School of Business at Queens University of Charlotte. She helped create the cur riculum for MBA and under graduate students, she developed an international leadership experience in Chile with Vertical, S.A. Joe Thompson of Durham has earned a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts. The Heritage Fellowship is the country's highest honor in the folk and tra ditional arts. Twelve fel lowships, which include a one-time award of $20,000 each, are Thompson presented to honorees from nine states. The awardees were cho sen from among 259 nomi nations on the basis of their artistic excellence, cultural authenticity, and contribu tions to their field. The NEA National Heritage FeUowship program is pre sented with support from the Darden Restaurants Foundation. Kim Kennedy earned a bachelor's in health sciences and management at Howard University, graduating in 2001. She earned a master’s in epidemiology at Emory University in 2003. The younger Kennedy worked for the state of Georgia as a liaison between the public health and med ical communities. Then she became a public health specialist for a global health informatics firm in Atlanta. Alyse Zeoli has joined Sterling Events Company as managing director of the Charlotte office. She will be responsible for Sterling's marketing and operations efforts as a full-service des tination management com pany in the Charlotte area. Prior to joining Sterling, Zeoli served for six years as Director of Operations for TBA Global Events, a desti nation management compa ny in Las Vegas. She will represent Sterling as a member of Visit Charlotte, the Greater Charlotte Hospitality & Tourism Alliance and the Greater Charlotte Chapter of the International Special Events Society. Lucy Emerson of Myers Park High School has been awarded an AFS 2007 Youth Ambassadors Arabic Summer Language Institute Scholarship, a distinction shared by only 25 high school students nationwide. Almost 200 students throughout U.S. were nomi nated for this prestigious, merit-based program awarding full scholarships for a summer study pro gram in Cairo, Egypt. The program is sponsored by AFS Intercultural Programs/USA and the Educational and Cultural Exchange Bureau of the U.S. Department of State. Scholarships were award ed on the basis of academic excellence, a series of writ ten essays, a demonstrable interest in learning the Arabic language, and mak ing a commitment to con tinue Arabic classes upon returning to the U.S. Lucy's full scholarship includes intensive Arabic language courses, as well as opportunities to visit impor tant historical sites and interact with Egyptian par liamentarians and leaders. She will also gain firsthand knowledge of the Egyptian culture by living with a host family to experience what it is like to live as a member of a family, school, and com munity during the six week program.
