Overman entertained at 5 o'clock tea Friday aftsrnoon, April 12th, compli mentary to Major Edouard Dupont of the French military commission of Camp Greene and the Daughters of the American Revolution. R, the state recent, Mrs. The odore Morrison, of Asheville, unable to lend her presence, but ever thought ful of the interest of the D. A. Overman entertained at a most brilliant dinner last evening, immediately after the reception in honor Of Major Dupont and Madam Darros Pimentel. The affair was beautiful in eve,ry detail. Ma. Dupont at Community Duilding. A large, eager and expectant au dience awaited the distinguished speaker at the Community building at 7:30 p. m., last evening. Tne meeting was presided over by our school superintended Mr. T. Wingate Andrews. The gracious prima donna of Salis bury Mr. R. Kyle Smith, accompanied by Miss Julia Crouch, sang with much pnwer ar.d feeling, " When the Boys Come "Home Agan." Major Dupont, using perfect Eng lish, ave a most interesting and hrilliRg recital of the war in Franre. The audience literally hunj; on his wo-.'s. H? expressed fellinly his joy over the fact that American soldiers are fighting side Dy side with French soldier. At the conclusion of his ad dress, Maj. Dupont was asked to sing the Marseillaise, the most magnifi cent battle cry of the world. By the singing with his wonderful voice and feeling, he drew his audience still closer to him. When he concluded, a burst of applause, led by the old "Rebel Yell" in the mouth of Col. Boyden, filled the Community build ing. The demonstration continued so lir.T that Maj. Dupont hand to sing i?ain the closing stanza. Members of the Woman's Liberty Luan committee of the city of Salis bury, whether members of team or workers in booths, are asked to as semble at the Community building Oil Sateurrfy evening al 7 o'clock to form in line for 3rd Liberty Loan parade. Just as many of the Red Cross workers as possibly can, are asked to meet at the Community building Saturday night at 7 p. m. to escort the speaker of the evening, Mr. Char lie Chaplin, to the tabernacle. The Woman's Missionary Society of the First Methodist church, met in the garment roon; Friday afternoon and did most excellent work. Mrs. Charles Price and Mrs. Pilchard Carlton at Hickory. Mrs. Charles Price and Mrs. Pritch ard Carlton report a most wonderful meeting of the Woman's Federation of Clubs which met at Hickory on Fri day. These ladies went as represen tatives of the Traveler's Club of Sal isbury. A more (ietailed account of the meeting will appear on Monday afternoon. Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 the women interested in the organization of a Young Womens Christian As sociation for Salisbury, met in t'ts Community builuing. The meeting was opened with a parser after which Mrs. Linton, secretary of Associated Charities, spoke on Salisbury's need for a Y. W. C. A.. M. Lumbal; spoke on the relation of the church to the Young Women's Christian As sociation, showing that the Y. W. C. A. supplements the work of the church. He emphasized the fact that the Y. W. C. A. is a splendid war work, and told of the great field of service here. Mis. A. S. Joiv s spoke on the woik of the Y. W. C. A., ai she has observed it in Nashville. Tenn. Mrs. W. A. Henne3see present ed the need of Salisbury for a Y. W. C. A. Mrs. A. E. Davis explained how it can be done from a financial standpoint. Then a prvisional com mittee was organized and Mrs. E. L'. They iil be at Raleigh, iDurtiam and Chapel Hill on this trip. Ned Lyons to Atlanta Hospital. Mr. James Lyons left last night for Fort Caswell to see his son, Ned, who has been sick for some time and who is to be taken to a hospital in At lanta in a few days. Interesting Spelling Match. A large audience twas present to enjoy the spelling match in the au ditorium of the West Ward school house lost evening. The match was under the .auspices of a society of the South Main street Methodist .hurch and the men were pitted against the women. The lines were spelled down twice, ifre men (idnnin? both times. Several evenings ago in a lilte eon test the women won twice. It is ex pected another fontest will be held soon to work off the tie. Personals.
