STIFF FIGHTING MARKS ADVANCE Allies Pressing On But in Some Places Against the Hardest Sort of Re sistance With the American Army North west of Verdun, Oct. 23 (5p. m.) (By lAssociated Press.)--The stiffest fighting of the lAmerican offensive west of the Mouse was under way to day. The line is swaying back and forth. In the regoin of Crand Pre, on the western end of the front, the Ameri cans threw back repeated violent Ger man counter-attacks, (By Associated Press.) The allied armies in France and Belgium are still driving the Germans toward their border, tut the process is now comparatively slow. On the sectors that are requisite to the stability of the entire German line where a crash through probably would mean the immediate collapse of the whole of the defensive system the most stubborn resistance is be ing offered by the enemy, and what gains are being made by the allies are virtually foot by foot in the face of the hornets of the battle line the machine guns. (Particularly vicious fighting is in progress west of the iMeuse rrver, where the Americans, in their en deavors to overcome the natural ob stacles barring the way northward to .Sedan, are laced oy roicKed troops with orders to hold them back at all i region from bouateau to ( Valenciennes, where the Americans gradu- ther way through the and between Tournai where the British after the enemv. Material Progress Made I Notwithstanding frantic endeav- ors of the enemy to maintain their positions on all three of these see-' material progress has been made. Likewise, northeast of Laon the French n an eight-mile front have delivered a thrust that carried two to miles. Into the hands of the British have fallen 2,000 more German pris- oners. . while the Americans west of the Meuse also have gathered in num- flf and a congiderabie quantity of his machine guns. Veritable nests -f machine guns are being encountered by the Americans as they attempt to press forward along the front from the Meuse to the town of Grand Pre, situated north of the Argonne forest, but in sipitc of cessfully sustained north of Grand Pre, and on this sector particularly strong concentrations of enemy ar tillery fire have gone almost for naught. On the western bank of the IMeuse the tolwn of Breuilles has been taken, the enemy having burned and evacuated it and retreated in the gen eral direction of Dun. French Near Montcornet Exactly what has been accomplish ed by the Frendh in a drive northeast of Laon, except that they have gained over a wide front, has not yet become apparent, but ti brings appreciably nearer Montcornet. the last im,port ant railroad junction in this region. North and south of Valenciennes. Field Marshal Haig has continued his attacks against the Germans and everywhere made good progress. Be tween LeCateau and Soiesmes, a sharp wedje has (been driven into the German line, threatening the town of Maubeuge on the east, and outflank ing Valenciennes on the south. North of Valenciennes the town of Bruay has been captured, virtually making Valeciennes untenable for the enemy. To the north of this region the British have reached the west bank of the Scheldt canal. (Already the British are in the western outskirts of Valenciennes, where bard fighting is in progress, the Germans having posted machine guns innumerable on the eastern bank of the canal which runs to the center of the city. In northern Belgium the Germans are still retiring. Unofficial reports are to the effect that Gtheot is being evacuated. Ports on Black Sea and Danube Closed London, Oct. 23.
