As cap- tjxirj the motor corps, she appointed Jtyfc'alary F. Henderson and MisB Grace Ovprmarrto command the corps in her absence, which position "they fielled with efficiency and the utmost devotion to duty. From the organization-of relief work, Misss Henderson had also held the postion of executive cocretary to the chairman of the in fluenza emergency committee. An im mense burden of work fell upon har. This she accomplished with dauntleis energy, and the chairman feels that the success of the relief movement is larcelv ue to her ability and exacti tude. With the motor corps must be ns'ociated tae ladies who volunteered ti ass'st in distributing the food to the stricken famil'es. Thist commit tee supplied each day workers to jro out with the motors who were willing ti ro into the homes of contagion. Gregory, Miss .1 met that in most instances families of Quinn, Miss Louise Ramey, Mrs. W. T. from two to ten members were abso- Ijiely helpless, every one in the fam ily til, und not a soul even to give tiieni a drink of water. I have now come, to the most ital department of our relief work, the department of volunteer nursing. Of t.-.ee women and men I canont say too mu h Their unselfishness and de vot;on was heroic. I place it on a par wth the merciful and humane work r f the nurse.-- at'the front. They per formed this work with no thought of self, and with almost no realization that t.iey were dointj anything out of the ordinary run of the day. Tlise women not only did the nurs ing, but in many instances cooked, brought in wood and coal, and water, and washed and ironed clothes. Many , gucn acts o unselfishness are known only to m6j to the patjents and to God whn oVp them nohilitv of arm. Grateful mention must be made of , iirSi T M. Especial mention should be made of the qujckness with which Mrs. Burt i an,i the surgical dressings room pro , v,;,iej masks bv the thousands for ! Salisbury, Spencer, Rowan and Stanly counties, and the passing troops, (models were sent Cabarrus ' county This was in addition to its usual monthly quqta of work. The work r0om under the direction of Mrs. Wal- ter Blackmer as supervisor provided sheets, pillow cases, flannel under ynrmentg an(j other necessities, and proved of invaluable assitance Early in the epidemic the presi dent of the Red Cross through the local press called for a fund to be u-ed for Relief work. The response was onerous and spontaneous. Mrs. iP0 Wallace was made custodian of without a grateful mention of the wholehearted support given the work 0f r,.ief by the Red Cross secretary fi;g Anne Neave, who in addition to j,.,r ordinary work, onerous enough at i times, nerformed many other n-;Vnn bv the press, through the editor 0f fi1p SansbuTV Evening Post. Mr. J. v iTuriPV, ar,H the editor of Woman's Wn-V. Mrs. W. H. Wiley cibuw should feel nroud of the' fP"ntv of hr public schools or the principal and a large percentage of thP teachers worked faithfully and devotedly throughout the entire epi- lemic, showing the finest type of civil loyalty. The Red Cross work of relief wps also greatly facilitated by the veriroi'8 co-operation and encourage ment of the caunty health officer, Dr. A. J. Warren, thejioard of health and the board of physicians. I do not feel that I can omit from this report a reference to the fine service given bv the operators of the j telephone company of Salisbury. They gave prampt and loyal attention at all times rnd at all hours. The working day of the chairman averaged 18 hours until the last three days of service. For three weeks the only hours free from telephone calls were ihn,3 from 1 to 6 in the morning. Without the sympathetic co-operation of the ladies in the telephone office her work would have been greatly hampered. RECORDS OF FARMERS GLORIOUS, Seervy Houston Reviews Triumphs or crops and Acreage In His Agri eUitwReport WasbThgton, Dee. 6v American farmers rendered glorious service to the United States and the Allies dur ing the war. Their part la thus sjm. marized in the report of Secretary D. r . Houston of the Department of Ag riculture, made public today: "The fjrst year of our participation in the war, 1917 witnessed the, Na tion's record for acreage planted 283,000,000 of the leading cereals, po tatoes tobacco and cotton, as against ? 1,000, 000 for the preceding year, 251.000,000 for the year prior to the outbreak of the European war ana 248.000.000 for the five-year average, 1910-1914. This is a gain of 22,000, 000 over the year preceding our entry into the war and of 35.000,000 over the five-venr average indicated. "Even this record was exceeded the second year of the war. There was planted in 1918 for the same crops 289,000,000 acres, an increase over the preceding record year of 6,600,000, Ic la n.tnll ni..u-k that n.ktl-1 the retige planted in wheat In 1917 wa8 8ii,ri,tiy less than that for the ( TW,ord ar of l9l5 it ex(;eKje(1 the fjVe-vear average (1910-1914) by 7,000,000; that the acreage planted in 1018 exceeded the previous record by. "In each of the tost two years cli matic conditions over considerable sections of the Union were adverse in 1917 especiall for wheat and in 1918 for corn. Notwithstanding this fact, the aggregrate yield of the lead ing cereals in each of these year ex ceeded that of any preceding year in the Nation s history except 1916. The estimated total for 1917 was 5,793, 000,000 bushles and for 1918 6,638, 000,000 bushels, a decrease of approx imately 160,000.000 bushels. But the conclusion would be unwarranted that the available supplies for human food or the aggregate nutritive value will be less in 1918 than in 1917.
