' JUST DRAGGED a mm r U tmbUim df . . , 11 It, I wilderness ringed in by hostile men, and obliged to rely for aid on a handful of the most desperate- criminals in Europe. i Another matter worried Jp Quintana: ho was not only ithort on provinionn, but what remained was cached in Drowned Valley; : and Mike Clinch and his men were guarding every outlet to that min ister region, excepting only the rocky and submerged trail by which he had made his exit. Now how to keep his loot; how to get back to Europe with it, was the problem that confronted Quin tana after robbing Darragh. And he determined to settle part of that question at once. About five miles from Ha r rod riace, within a hundred rods of which he had held up Hal Smith, Quintana halted, seated himself on a rotting log, and waited until his men came up and gathered around him. For a little while, in utter si lence, his keen tyes traveled from one visage to the next, from Henri Piquet to Victor Goorgiades, to Sanchez, to Sard. . His intent scrutiny focused on Sard; linger ed. If there were anybody he might trust, a little way, it would be Sard. Then a polite, untroubled smile smoothed the pale, dark features of Jose Quintana: "Bien, messieurs, the coup has been success. YesT Ver well; in turn, then, en accord with our cus tom, I shall dispose myse'f to lis ten to your good advice." Ho looked at Henri Pitquet, smiled and nodded invitation to speak. Picquet shrugged:' "For me, mon capitaine, oet ees ver' sim ple. We are five. Therefore, di vide into five xe gems. After zat, each one for himself to make hie way out " ".Nick Solzar and Henry Beck are in the Drowned Valley," inter rupted Quintana. JPicquet shrugged again; San chez laughed, saying : "If they are there it is their misfortune. Also, we others are in a hurry." Picquet added: "Also five shares are sufficient division." "It is propose, then, that we abandon our comrade Beck and Salzar to tho rifle of Mike Clinch?" "Why not?" demanded Georgi ades sullenly "we shall have worse to face before we see the Place de 1'Opera." "There remains, also, Eddie Ab rams," remarked Quintana. Crooks never betray their attor ney. Everybody expressed a will r.ess to have the five shares of plunder properly assessed to satis fy the ft due to Mr. Abrams. He then spread a large white handkerchief on the ground; and, from his pockets, he poured out the glittering cascade. Yet, like a l feeding panther, every sense re ' mained alert to the slightest sound I or movement elsewhere; and when Georgiades grunted from excess emotion, Quintana's right hand held a pistol before the grunt had ceased. 1 i a. ! ; vi .ii division of loot; every reckless "uv " " j visage reflected the etrain of the .j alg0 prfjfer to come you iituation. ,", v others," growled Sanchez. Every wolfish eye was on the leader. He smiled, rested hia pair ff pistols on either knee. 'Is there," he asked softly, "any gentleman who shall objec'i" "Who," demanded Georgiades hoarsely, "is to divide for us?" "It is for such purpose," ex plained Quintana suavely, "that my frien', Emanuel Sard, has ar rive. Monsieur Sard is a brokaire of diamon's, as all know ver well. Therefore, it shall be our frien' Sard who will divide for us what we have gain today by your in dustry." The savage tension broke with a laugh at the word chosen by Quin tana to express their efforts of the morning, , Sard had been standing with one fat hand flat against the trunk of a tree. Now, at a nod from Quin tana, he squatted down, and, with the same hand that had been rest ing against the tree, he spread out the pile of Jewels into a flat layer. As he began to divide this into five parts, still usinV the flat of his pudgy hand, something poked him lightly in the ribs. It was the muzzle of one of Quintana's pistols. Sard, ghastly, looked up. His palm, sticky with balsam Igum, quivered in Quintana's grasp. "I was going to scrape it off," he gasped. "The tree was sticky t . Quintana, with the muzzle of his pistol, detached half a dozen dia monds and rubies that clung to the gum on Mr. Sard's palm. "Wash!" he said dryly. Sard, sweating with fear, wash ed hia right hand With whisky from his pocket-flask, and dried it for general inspection. "My God," he protested tremu lously, "it was accidental, gentle men. Do you think J'd try to get away with anything like that" Quintana . coolly shoved him aside and with the barrel of his pistol he pushed the flat pile of gems into five separate -heaps. On ly ho and Georgiades knew that a magnificent diamond ' had been lodged in the muzzle of his pistol. The eyes of the Greek flamed with rage at the trick, but he awaited the division before he should come to any conclusion. Examina tion by army officers of note's tak en during the recent conferences here with a selected group of civil ians as to principles which should govern any future military draft regulations has brought out sever al distinct features which the con ferees were agreed should apply to the classification of enlisted per sonnel. For one thing it was the judg ment of the civilian conferees, all of whom had war-time draft exper ience, that work necessary in the army should be classified by occu pations in order that the classifica tion of men called to the colors eould be expedited and their as signments be based on the similar ity of their civil training and mil itary work they were best fitted to perform. It was also believed that the classification of men should be gin when they were called by lo cal draft boards and not await their arrival at mbolilzation cen ters. . '..v '..V Another point brought out was the difficulty of dealing in the afmy with men of low mental cali ber. A suggestion was made the regulations - should prevent such men from being called for active military service. , p The conferees were in harmony also aa the desirability of using men available only for limited mil itary service from the beginning of the operation of the draft law ;4 AMERICAN LAND CO., Agi.9 Greensboro, N. C. and nut deferring such cases for later treatment. . To meet the problem of dealing with limited service men and occu pational specialists the suggestion was made that clearing pool cen ters for each of these groups might he established and the excess from the various local boards could be turned over to these PoIs fr further assignment. The plan would work especially well in dis tribution of specially qualified oc cupational specialist, It was held mi:tt and eff When Mutt and Jeff are seen in this city, which .will be at the Strand theatre tomorrow night, tley will appear in one of the best musical comedies that it Jia been rur good fortune to chronicle for sonv time.
