As will ' bo seen from the an nouncement elsewhere, another new school of high grade will be opened . this '.. fall in the Eastern part of the county, known as Au wra f Academy, and will be under the management of the Friends. This school will be all that they claim for it. The Friends have long been noted for their good schools. This writer was fortu nate in attending their schools i:when a boy near where the new academy stands, and he has always had the most pleasant recollec t ions of his school days there. In fact our first teacher was a Friend nd her mode of histruo tion, kindness and nrmness made Tin indelible impression upon our mind which has been a great help to us ever since in all school work : We suggest to the Yariou? io- litical parties represented in the 3rd Senatorial district, corupris- ing Northampton and Bertie coun ties, that the district 'conventions be hel d at Rich Square this year. They have been held in Bertie county for a number of years, but Kich Square is near the line and is a central point. The delegates from the upper . part of North ampton would have about fifty miles to travel, by the nearest roads, toreach Rich Square, which is, we think, as far as any-Bertie delegate would have to go to reach that place. Delegates from Ber tie could come by rail part of the way, while the train schedules on the roads in Northampton are such that the delegates from this coun ty could not do this without stay ing over one night. Rich Square is a progressive place and de serves some recognition of its central location and easv accessi bility from every point in the tw;o counties. r In Foreign Waters. Lonnie M. Cook, of-Lasker, who joined the United States Navy year or two ago and is now on board the "Charleston" which was at Rio dur ing the recent troubles, has written a letter home from which we make the following extracts which may inter est some of bis acquaintances and those boys who are anxious to go to sea.. - - , Calleo, Peru, S. A., I , June 4, 1894. J I am feeling very tired from being a month at sea. We left Montevid eo the 11th of May and arrived at, I Sandy Point the 20th. In passing through the Straights of Magellan the "scenery was grand. With Gape Horn on one side and Patagonia on the other, with nothing bnt "snow and ice to be seen, the sight was beauti ful. I had been in hot weather ever since I Jeft t lie IJnited States and when we arrived in the traiwhts of Blagellan jt snowed every day and the weather was very cold. We were so far from the sun it didn't look to be more than, iwo hours high at noon and . 'was far ta the Nort h of us. The days" wer only eight hours lon. We left Sandy Point on the 22 "and then the days grew hnior and the weather hotter everv diy. W hen we first readied the Pact fie Ocean 1 became very sea sick. We are now at Caleo, Pera, where your people obtain "the Peruvian guano; from. In my travels I car see sum mer one week and winter the next. I aril now aliout 12,000 miles from home. It seems like I am out of the worid. - ' ' There are some hopes of onr ship going ont of commission this sum mer which I trnst is true. I would in that event stand a chance of going to the Barracks. I am tired of going to sea. I - . Yours truly, . Lonnie M. Cook. Peoples Party Picnic. There was a Peoples party picnic at McDaoiei's Spt ingrin the Eastern part of the county, la8t Tuesday." J t was attended by a larcje numler of - c - people and speeches were made by M. L. Wood, of Bertie, and oth ers. There will be another meeting at Roxobel on August 9th, uhich will be addressed by the Hon. Buck Kitchen, of Halifax. Time will be divided with anyone who wishes to reply. Everybody invited to come aiid bring along a basket of refresh nients as an ad day meeting will be lield and dinner will be served on the vrouutl?. ii. The Meanest Man.
