THE POETRY DEPARTMENT. Motto: "If you, don't see wliat 1014, want , ash for it 1" Edited by Mrs. M. H. Rice. r t Sitting: and Setting. Finding the following unique ar ticle on llie proper nse of the words sitting and selling in the July mini tier of The' Florida Ruralist. I here by transcribe it for the readers of tiie I'atuos and Glp:4neu. We frequently see in the Poultry articles the expression sit'ing of liens. Von cannot sit a lien. A lien can sit, but you cannot sit her. An 'dividual can sit. but cannot et. A caother can, and often doe, set a ,.l: ... Lt;i i.t ,.,n,.t v child down in any such wav. A wo . i. i .. ' gram oiatically. A very eimple rule will enable one to use the terms sit and set, and sitting . . i and setting correctly. When the action applies to yourself, the term eit and sitting, is the correct ex- pressiou. When applied to another, or to an object or tuing, the terms set and setting are the proper ones If you are placing yourself on a chair: or a hep ion a nest of ejres or a dish on the tahje, you are setting the object in its place. A remem brance of this rule and its proper observance, will correct the misuse of the term eo common in print. An ounce of preventive is worth a pound of cure." The State Xormal ami Industrial School at GreenstHjro is rapidly be Icoraingone of the most important factors in forwarding tbe educational interests of North Carolina. It has grown more rapidly id strength and influence than any similar institution ever established in our .-'midst. Though last year was only the sec ond year of its existence the Nor mal and Industrial .School had a larg" er enrollment of students tlan nny other instution for young men or Younir women in the State. President Mo- I Iver informs us that he has received i uorc titan t00 applicants for udrui3- ision for the third year .beginning VA-W . J V1 plibants can be ailmitted because of I I limited recitation room. About 250 j Iwamers can be accomodated in the i dormitories, and 150 will board in private families. Yancey in the westeleven in nutn her. This lack of accommodations i9 much to be regretted and should be reaicdiea by the next Legislature. More domitories and other buildings are badly needed and the money necessary for erecting them should be appropriated at the earliest pos sible date. It is a pity that young women who are anxious lo ava l them selves of the advantages ottered by this popular institution should have to be turned awa because of a lack of house room. "4 The value of such institutions as the Agricultural and Mechanical College at Raleigh and the Slate Normal and Industrial School at (Jrtenloro cannot be overestimated. Whether we realize it or not tli struggle tor life is daily growing more desperate snd the chance to eufn a living becoiu'ng more di Mi cult. The rudiments of an education are easy to obtain, being taught in the public schools throughout the land. But it is the province ot these institutions to teach them to out this knowledge to practical use and make it a means of earning their daily bread. They are doing their work well. A Boy's Essay on Tobacco. 'I obacco grows something like cab bage, but I never saw none cooked. ( have heard men say that cigars that was given them election days for nothing was mostly cabbage leaves. Tobacco stores are mostly kept by wooden Injuns, who stand at the door and fool little boys by offering them a bunch of cigars which is glued in to the Injun's hands, and is made ol wood also. I tried to smoke a cigar once, and I felt like Epsom salt. lonacco was invented oy a man med Walter Raleigh. When the people nrst saw him smoking they thougkt he was a steamboat, and were frhhtened. My sister Nancy is a girl, don't know whether she lides tobaccor now There is a young man named Leroy, who comes to see her. I guesVshe likes Leroy. He was standing onstLe steps one night, and he had a cigar-in his mouth, and he said he didn't know as she would like it, aud sliKsaid, "Leroy, the pur fume is agrceab But when ray big brother lighted hi pipe, Nancy said "Get out of this house, you horrid creature ; the smell of tobieco makes me sick." Snufl is injun aieal made out of tobacco. I took a little snuff once, and thea I sneezed. Ex. House Moving. Tht iindersirrned in still nrenrd i " l r to turn around or move houses.
