The following timely and sugges
tive editorial to the pastors of New
York city is applicable to preachers
everywhere:
A few days ago thero was a meet
ing of ministers In this city, and
somo of them deplored the indiffer
enco of tho great crowd to religious
eervices, complained may we be
permitted as a lay crittic to say they
whined? about sparse congregations
and the difficulty with which conver
sions are made, and aU that sort
of thing.
Weil, no wonder the people ar
cold. The pulpit and church are re
frigerators. Clergymen generally
preach as though it really didn't
matter much whether men go to
sheol or heaven. They read a pi!e of
manuscript in a droaning, doleful
voice, and the dull monotone is no
better than an anaesthetic. They tell
their hearers that virtue is virtuous
and vice vicious; that we are all
prone to evil ae the sparks fly up
ward, and that if we don't mend our
ways right soon we shall go to ever
lasting smash, and do it with the
cadence with which they ak the
servant to pass the fried potatoes
at the breakfast table.
When a man's apartment is on fire
he doesn't wait to part his hair or
brush his coat, neither does he walk
leisurely up to the janitor nTr re
quest him to inform the Fire Depart
ment at his leisure. Not a bit of it.
He yells attho top of hisjoice. He
rings every bell he can get hold of.
He makes a terrific uproar, rushes
out into the street in his shirt sleeves
and gathers a crowd in about two
miautee.
Now, then, if the world instead of
the apartment is all ablnzo, and if we
are really cn the road to perdition
and going as fast as a fellow on a to
boggan slide, why are you so mighty
cool about it, gentlemen? That is
what is the matter with the clergy
they are so awfully cool that the
people are fully convinced that there
is some mistake about the danger
signal. r . ri
You can'talk learnedly about pre

why, we have a good sized one right

Milk and Typhoid Fever.
Scientific American.
The agencies that milk may as
sume in the propogation of fatal dis
eases has received much- attention
during recent years. Dr. Klein's
inyestigations. have confirmed the
belief that milk has in a large num
ber of cases been responsible for
epidemics of scarlet fever.
Tuberculosis, it is also known, can
be developed in cows, and can be
distributed in like manner by their
milk. Much consumption is believed
to be due to this origin.
A recent epidemic which occurred
in a New Jersey suburb of this city
goes far toward reducing th9 proba
bility of milk acting as a dissemina
tor of typhoid lever to a certainty.
A florist bad been in the habit of sup
plying five families with milk. He
was attacked by typhoid fever, and
after an illness of several weeks ex
pired. It was found that he had been in
the habit of drinking large quanti
ties of milk himself, while the other
members of his household used very
little. Typhoid fever also began to
appear among the five families whom
he supplied. In each house there
were one or more cases. In one fam
ily the suspected milk had been uned
for providing cream for coffee, etc.,
and the bulk of the fluid, or skim
milk, left had been used for cooking.
In this house only one case appedred.
Upon inquiry, it was found that the
invalid, a domedtic, had habitually
drunk the skim-milk. The others
had not used it and were unaffected.
New cases were ad ded to the list, but
were all confined to the five families
in question and to the florist's bouse.
In one family five or six cases occur
red, including one fatal attack.
On investigation the water supply
of the milkman's premises was found
to be far from satisfactory. He re
ceived water from tho regular water
works. He used a portion of the
water pip s within his premises for
the conveyance of liquid fertilizer.
This inconceibvaly unclean practice
would offer a clew to the source of the
trouble had it been continued. But
it is asserted postively that, since
last February, no liquid manure had
entered the pipes. A well of unques
tionably bad water existed an the
premises, but doea not appear to
have been used to any extent. The
water supply in the meadow where
the cows vere pastured was contami
nated to some extent with sewerage.
It is very doubtful if a cow could
drink water containing tho typhoid
poison, and, without becoming ill,
could communicate it to her-milk.
None of the cows has shown signs of
6icknees. The propagation of the
disease by milk is almost absolutely
proved in this case. Where the poi
son or germ came from is altogether
uncertain, and the problem has not
passed the conjectural stage. If im
pure water were used for washing
the cans, it would afford a satisfac
tory clew.
Consumption Barely Cered.

Augustus and Marie had been

some minutes. At last she remarked:
"You are very quiet this evening."
"Yes I am," he admitted, frankly,
"I don't suppose many of the young

conversation as I am."
"Some of them talk more than you

"What does Jack talk about?"
"Why," she responded, carefully
watching his face, "hie favorite tonic

"That is a subject that I carefully

as much of a fool as he looked.
"For what reason? I'm sure its no

Dear heart, the yean hare gone apae
Since yoa and I first met and loved,
Tet tn my dreams I see your f ae.
An-, as of old my heart Is moved,
By lore's resistleea power.
Once more, I feel the tender ceron
That thrilled my heart into perfect life,
And taste again the exquisite bliss,
And know the deep unwavering faith
Of that too happy hoar.
I hear, as then, your loving tone,
And feel the clasp of yonr strong hand,
A girl's heart is not made of stone
And how conld 1 such love withstand.
Or send you, dear one, away!
I could not when your eyes sought mine,
To read in them my love for yon.
When I read your message, half divine.
And believed my lover brave and true,
I could do y you ay.
Yon called me yonr own yonr bonny brftlo.
And whispered love words low and sweet.
You said my place was by your side
Your arm would stay my falf ring feet,
Yonr breast my refuge be.
But, love, the years have flown away,
Into time's unfathomable abys,
Our brightest hopes are cold and gray,
And I know no more the exquisite bliss
.Of being loved by thee.
I try to think it is better so,
Though my heart Btill yearns for is king.
Whom I worshipped in the Ion j; ago,
And I cannot hush the murmuring;
Cf a love that will not die.
Dear heai t, perhaps we'll know sometime
Why happiness was here denied,
When we reach the other fairer clim?.
