You have wasted your time and money and land You make a crop, of course, but only half as much as the man who guessed right. But a man Can't Guess Right Every Time. You can't afford to take a chance that might waste a year of your life. The only right way to do about this thing of ferti lizing is to buy some brand that is known to produce the best resu ts every time a brand that the manufac turer can gurantee to be the same in every bag and in every part of the bag. No man can be certain of the quality of a fertilizer mixed by hand on the farm. Cotton won't prosper if fertilized with acid phosphate only. Ditto kaiait. Ditto cotton seed meal. But, if all these are properly mixed together, you get the answer. If you mix by hand, you will feed one plant acid phosphate, one kainit, and another cotton seed meal, and your crop will be uncertain. If you buy a brand of fertilizer made and. guaranteed by a reputable" man ufacturer to be suitable for your needs, you will get a uniform result and you take no chances. " Mr. Boylin: Some people say I have kinder gone back on our people Id writing about the poor, school houses, the unpainted buildings, the unattractive grounds, etc. I have only told the truth. I have only written from the child's stand point. The preacher tells of the faults of the sinner because he wants him to turn from his evil way and do right. If he did not tell the sinner he was do ing wrong the sinner would continue to do wrong." Someone ought to tell the men of Anson county that they are sinning agralnst 3od as well as committing the great wrong and great error of trying to hoard their money at the expense of the chlldrens edu cation. They are piling up money while the children are shivering ia cold, djmp unpainted one room shacks called school bouses ith out house conveniences that would be disgraceful to the wildest African jungle. , The men begrudge giving twenty-five cents out of each hun dred dollars they own to the chil dren. They eould afford to devote two dollars a year out of each one hundred and not miss it; if they would we could have nice school buildings erected amid beautiful flowers, trees and plants. Large play grounds and things built to amuse us. Some peo ple think the children should have no pleasure around the school , house, mm HER LIFE TO r Lydia E. WILMOTH, HOAGEH. - (Mention this paper) that they should keep their eyes on the books from sun up to sun down. I have seen the pictures of school houses and the grounds around the school houses that the Northern chil dren have up in New York and Mas sachusetts. Are they any better than we are that they get these fine build ings while we have the dirty little hulls, called houses In North Caro lina, or is it that the men up there think more of their children than our fathers think of the children down here? Up there they have all kinds of nice things on their school grounds. Down here we are not even encour aged to do a thing to make our grounds pretty. Those Northern children learn to do many things that fit them for life work and fit them to get the cotton at 15 cents a pound ard sell it tour $1.50 a pound after they have run it through a spinning ma chine and a weaving machine. But there is a change for the bet ter. When both of our county ja pers offer to give valuable plecea of machinery like the De Lavel cream Separator to the children of the schools to sell and to use the money in putting op swings and other, play things, it doea seem that there is a mighty change coining for the good of we children, and, Mr. Boylin, ev ery child in the county and every child born in the county hereafter will have cause to honor your name and remember you with gratitude for the pait you are taking; and, as your paper has such an influence for good, I know you will be able to get the men of Anson to realize their er ror in not doing more lor the educa tion of their children, the fitting them for life work. Mr. Boylin, I tell you this getting subscribers for the M. A L is getting real exciting; there are hundreds of children at work and the grown up people say they are about to pay out all their money for subscriptions. Mr. H. told me he had paid for two more years in advance. He said Jiramie, who is a little friend of his came and begged so hard he had to subscribe for a year, and that Sallie, who is his special pet came and said she had only secured six subscrip tions and wanted to work up to ten and that if she could only get him to help her out she would feel so much encouraged, so he gave her a dollar for a subscription so that made twelve dollars. But Mr. H. said he could welfafford to help out the school because he was also helping out a good newspaper enterprise and a good man when he was helping you. He certainly thinks a great deal of you. I think before we get through that a great many men will have paid in advance many years. But turn about is fair play, Mr. Boylin. Father says you have credited some men for as long as five years and now if they pay you five years in advance that it is nothing but advancing up old obligations to you. Especially can tbey afford to do this when they are helping the schools of the county and alo taking part in the "Good. Butter making Enterprise." Can you tell me, Mr. Boylin, why you havn't urged the farmers long before this to make good butter and get thir ty-two cents a pound for it. Did you not know abont it years ago? You have traveled and seen many place and it does seem as though you ought to have done this years ago. But I wont quarrel with youi about it be cause you are doing the right thing now. You. must keep this thing up, you must urge the farmers to keep good cows instead of the poor old raw boned, long-horned scrub stock of by gone days. , Brother keeps kicking, but he will go out with me, he's kinder 4iskee- ry" in going towards Ansonville. He says those people up there will surely bouce toe if tbey find out who I am. Mr. Boylin, I havn't said anything against them. They are real good people, they have only for gotten about their school. They are not going to let us have our $S0O school building and they only a $600 building and a part of that money comes from the county fund and take as a gilt part of the betterment mon ey to help build a house. These peo ple are rich and tbey are Dot going to be classed among the beggars of the county or the betterment associa tionI know that much. BUTTER MOLD CONTEST. On the occasion of the awarding of the two De Laval Separators to the schools having obtained the greatest number of subscriber to the Anso nian and Messenger and Intelligen cer, the prizes for butter mo'd mak ing will be given to the boys and girls of the public schools. In com peting for these prizes all children who have attended school this winter can compete no matter If their schools have already closed. The name and e'je of the child, and what school it attended, the rural rout address, and postoffiee should be written on each r old so as to identify the. molds for returning to those who made them. A.written certificate reading an fol lows must accompany each mold: "I ' the (father or mother) of - certify that .he or she) made this butter mild." All those who made ax handles last year on which no prize was awarded are requested to call on Mr. E. F. Feriton at the Wood and Iron Works building and get their handles unless they desire them to remaia on exhi bition. The handles are now on ex hibition In the Anson County School Betterment Association's Work Boom, where they are greatly ad mired and praised by many people from all over the country. These people greatly admire the work done by Anson's children and don't hesi tate, to express their admiration for the tr skill. Their is to be given to the boys and girl of Anson, by Capt. J. T. Pat rick, forty-nine dollars and fifty cents in lish, which is to be divided into 12 prizes for butter mold making. Ten dollars to girl ot school age, five dollars to boy; eight dollars to girl! under 15, four dollars to boy; six dollars to girl under 13, three dollars to boy; four dollars to girl un der bine, two dollars to boy; three dollars to girl under seven, one dollar and fifty cents to boy; two dollars to girl under six, one dollar to boy. All molds to be uniformly same siza, three inches wide by four and one- half inches, inside measure, and four Inches deep. Any thickness cf plank, theides ot tobacco boxes, or auy kind of dressed plank will do. A little box with no to top or bottom, repre sents (the mold. A piece of aboard, one-half inch thick that fits neatly into box with hole bored in centre to fit handle, completes the mold ex cept the carving on the last named piece. It is a very simple thing to male. Parents, it is not the money that the child gets, that Is of tha greatest value. The value comes in getting the children of Anson to using tools, in taking their first lesson which teaches them to be manufacturers and thereby keeping in the South the mil lions that are spent for toys, agricul tural implements, from a jewsharp to grand piano. Until we start in and teach the children and young folks bow to make things and establish industries, we may expect to be hew ers of wood and drawers of water fr r the people, who, by their foresight, al ready have these factories. We get 15 cents per pound for our cotton in a raw state and then pay those peopole for manufactured goods fifty cents to twenty dollars a pound. Now, my countrymen, do you want your your children to continue in these ruts. If not, encouraage the ladies and gentlemen who have this most important movement well un der way. Could you arrange to show him build ings of interest and send carriage?" The mayor rose to the occasion, and in due course four dark complexioned gentlemen with turbans and volumi nous trousers arrived at Cambridge.
