The fund, originated in early October in answer to numerous requests by students, was in tended to purchase a television set for the student lounge locat ed on the first floor of the men’s dormitory. Chairs and other fur nishings were to be included in the benefits of the fund which in order to buy all needed com modities would have amounted to around $300. Solicitors working under the direction of the Men’s Judi ciary collected around $96, or about $2.00 each from 48 of the male members of the Chowan student body. There are approx imately 150 male students at Chowan. All of the amount was refunded to contributors when the drive was abandoned. Leonard Pulley, secretary treasurer of the men’s Judi ciary, was in charge of collec tions for the organization. The target date for the drive was postponed on three different occasions to give students more time to raise the money. The drive was begun after a motion was introduced and passed upon at a meeting of the male students. Cabins 530 and 520 and the first floor of the dormitory led in percentage of contributions, said Pulley. The Braves ran their victory string to three games with a 66 to 61 win over the Newport News Ship Builders, December 6. They came back from half time to pour in 10 points and overcome the Ship Builders 30 to 29 half time lead. Paul Blake of Wilson, N. C., sparked the drive with six points with less than four minutes gone in the half. Roger Byrd put on a drive in the final minutes of the game to keep Coach Herb Appenzeller’s Braves out in front when he picked four Newport News re bounds off the backboard and turned them into six points for the Braves.
