THE CHOWANIAN January 1958 MEET THE STUDENTS MEN'S COUNCIL—Officers of the Chowan College Men’s Council, seated left to right, are Billy Bray, Hertford; Robert Davis, Bath, secretary; Frank Ashfield, Ahoskie, president. Standing; Carroll Greene, New Bern; Charlie Whitley, Murfreesboro, vice president; Joe Sumler Newing ton, Va.; Gene Williams, Capron, Va.; Mills Pruden, Suffolk, Va.; Jerry Wrenn, Cedar Grove; Ed Tippett, Roanoke Rapids. /Hen's Council is Functioning For Benefit of All Students In the past few weeks there has been a lot of talk, contro versy, and criticism over one particular body that has just recently started to function. This body is known as the Men’s Council. The members of this Council believe that most of the controversy is due to the mis understanding and misinforma tion of the general student body. It is the purpose of this article to give the students a true picture of the council, its work, its authority, and its as pirations for the future. The Men’s Council has been organized at Chowan College for the past f*w years, but only until recently has it bothered to try to do anything for the men students. It was only last year that a constitution was drafted but then, it was not put to use until his year. There has been talk for the last three or four years of a student government at Chowan but this talk has always died out before anything was accom plished. Numerous circumstan ces this year have brought the question of student governrr>ent to a head. Realizing th' , the members of the Men’s Council have strived to keep the fires of student government burning by constantly talking and work ing with the FacOdty Affairs Committee and their efforts up- to-date can be easily seen, as there is a student government now functioning at Chowan Col lege. The main work of the Men’s Council is to promote student government on this campus. In doing this, it is often necessary to meet with men that are in volved or believed to be involved in mishaps or trouble that have occurred on this campus. By simply talking to and question ing these men, the guilty parties are found out and punished as the Men’s Council sees fit. This preceeding action was formally left up to the Student Affairs Committee, but they, in the interest of student government, now only review and comment on the preceedings and decisions The authority and power of the council stems directly from the president of the college and the Student Affairs Committee. The Council, in effect, takes over for the Student Affairs Committee. The Student Affairs Committee is by no means dis banded, it has merely placed itself in the background and left the majority of the action in the hands of the Council and the Faculty Committee, working together, that will promote and insure the ultimate success of student government on this campus. The Council is now working to replace the juke box that was removed earlier due to the van dalism of a few people. There are many other improvements and tasks that lie ahead for the Council but they are far to numerous to mention in this ar ticle. Nothing can be accom plished though, without the con tinued support of the student body. During the last few trou blesome weeks, a number of students have responded won derfully and helped the council with its tasks. This goes to prove that many students have awak ened to the cry for student government and are determined that it shall not fail. With this belief and sentiment shared by the entire student body, student government wiU not nor carmot fail. 'There will be but one course open, its fruitfulness and success. —Frank Ashfield Name: Ashley Tyler Home: Rich Square Future Plans; Engineer Pet Peeve: T. Chowanoka Staff Working To Have Annual Ready By June The Chowan yearbook, The Cho wanoka, which in past years has been arriving after the close of school will be on time this year. Plans are for the annual to be ready before the close of the term. The annual staff has made their first deadline date with Myers Yearbooks Inc. and plans to meet the other two on schedule. Students of the Roy Parker School of Printing, working with Henry Mayberry of the Myers, Co., have composed, made proofs and pasted up 35 pages of the Cho wanoka and mailed them to the company to be printed. The room formerly used as the College relations office has been converted into a photographic studio and all pictures for the annual will be made here by Harold Brown, instructor in the Graphic Arts Department. The purchase of new -camera equipment for this purpose was authorized by Dr. Whitaker. AROUND THE CAMPUS Hello, everyone! Here we are, back again with news of happenings around the campus. The Christmas holidays seem to have been quite profitable for some of Chowan’s girls. Those receiving diamonds were Sarah Crisp from Frank Ashfield; Bobbie Jean Wil son from Bert J6hnson; Barbara Jean Russell from Jessie Ray Mansfield; Betty Everett from Cola Perry of Colerain and Vivian Pugh from Landis Neal of Great Bridge, Virginia. The chicken pox found its way to Judy Taylor last Friday. She has been in since then, but she hopes to be out soon. It seems as though Eloise S. has developed a most unusual habit. If anyone has noticed, she and Ashley eat together every day. Watch out Eloise, and don’t let Ashley make you forget your diet! What’s this we hear about Jane W. and John A.? Could it become a diamond ring affair? Only time wiU teU! There are quite a few amateur photographers on the third floor of the columns building. They can pop up most any time, especially in the little back room on back hall. Sibyl, what is it that keeps, you occupied on every Wednesday and Saturday nights? Could it be a boarder at Evans’? What is that Cha-Cha tune that Kay P. keeps humming while she IS working in the Ubrary? I wonder if Bob B. has anything to do with It? The snow was very pretty but quite cold. When the lights went out, it was a happy occasion be cause no one had to study. This was truly a rare treat! Do all of you know the couple “3t plays Romeo and Juliet on the first floor every night? If you don’t, ask Irene P. or Mike J.; they can give you the requested information. think CHOWANOKA STAFF—Pictured above are the staff members of the Chowan College yearbook, “The Chowanoka”.
