THE CHOWANiAN, NOVEMBER 1958 Chowanian Camera Records Homecoming Highlights % Queen Reba Presenting Ball to Co-capfain Lanny Roof. hi ■‘ji 't-ii » 3. r % Parade Judged Chowan^s Best In Many Years Saturday night, before the Homecoming game with Wingate College, everybody participated in or attended the Homecoming parade. The parade formed on the campus in front of the “Big House” at 6:45. The Ahoskie High School band, with their high-stepping majorettes, head ed the parade. The cheerleaders were behind the band, followed by the various floats, the last of which carried the Queen and her court. The Monogram Club float depicted a Chowan Brave ready to “scalp” the Bulldogs. This float was very good and much noticed. ihe Baptist Student Union featured a church with pupils in front, dressed in green and white. The Phi Theta Kappa's repre sented a schoolroom filled with “Chowan minded” students. They were spelling the word CHOWAN as the float progress ed through the streets of Mur freesboro. The float for the Freshman class featured a grave in memo- rium to Wingate College. The Sophmore class float was also very good. Three Chowan Squaws were seated in a semi circle in front of a tepee. Be hind these squaws a man was tied to a stake. The Queen’s float was beau tiful in every respect. Our lovely horhecoming queen, Reba Hale, sat on her throne at the top of the float. Her attendents repre senting the various organizations were as follows: Betty Jo Las siter, Phi Theta Kappa; De- lores Hill, choir; Brenda Brad shaw, Baptist Student Union; Bonnie Tinkham, Freshman class; Sandra Liverman, Soph- more class; and Kitty Carawan, Monogram club. These pretty girls were all attired in evening dresses and looked very charm ing. The parade proceeded through the streets of the town, and to the football field. There it dis banded in time for the kick-off. CLOWNS AT HOMECOMING - Laugh-getters in the Homecom ing parade were these two: Mary Hunter, Williamston, and Rebecca Powers, Great Bridge, Va. They hiked along with the procession through the streets of Murfreesboro. INfiATE Freshmen Riding on Class Float NEA Meeting At Elizabeth City By BEATRICE CROCKER On rainy October 21, in the Sheep Auditorium in Elizabeth City, the Elizabeth City High School band entertained those at tending the National Education Association. At the general session a Scotchman, Cameron Ralston, spoke on “A Social Interpreta tion of Education”. He was a very interesting and dynamic speaker. The Northeastern District of the N. E. A., composed of East Carolina and Chowan Colleges met and dined together at the Fort Raleigh Restaurant. At the business session the district officers for the following year were elected. They are, president, Wayne Forbes of East Carolina; vice president, Audrey Marriner, Chowan, secretary; and Jo Ann Tew, East Carolina. After the general session the teachers and students visited ex hibits in the high school gym nasium. The Chowan Chapter of the N.E.A. is very young and in a learning process and trying hard to improve. The officers of the Chowan N. E. A. for this year are Gene Williams, president; Charles Perlick, vice president; Audrey Marriner, secretary; Manley Dunlow, treasurer; and James Burnham, publicity. Those attending the District N.E.A. convention from Chowan College were Catherine Tripplet, Philip Bates, Frank Ballenger, David Snell, James Burnham, Audrey Marriner, and Gene Williams. CHEERLEADERS — Fighting along with the Braves this year are these attractive cheerleaders: Left to right, Sandra Pendergraft, Durham; Patsy Picot, Franklin, Va.; Linda Sheek, Yadkinville; Ann Mitchell, Woodville; Jeanne Miles, Norfolk, Va.; Edith Workman, Titusville, Fla.; and Faye Adams, New Bern. Not pictured, other cheerleaders are, Brenda Bradshaw, Franklin, Va.; Betty Jo Lassi ter, Ahoskie; Chloe Ward, Durham; and Bonnie Tinkham, Alex andria, Va.
