Seven Join Faculty
Here are seven of the new
faculty members. Everyone
at Chowan wishes to welcome
each one to the campus.

CHARLEY L. SANDIFER—
New on Chowan’s faculty this
year is Mr. Charley L. Sandifer.
He hails from the state of Mis
sissippi, attended the Crystal
Springs Consolidated School in
Crystal Springs, Mississippi,
Copiah-Lincoln Junior College in
Wesson, Miss., Mississippi Col
lege, New Orleans Baptist Sem
inary, and the University of Mis
sissippi. Mr. Sandifer lists his
hobbies as fishing, music, and
traveling. He is married and
very happy. At Chowan he is
teaching English composition
and literature. Mr. and Mrs.
Sandifer have six children.
WARREN G. SEXTON—Mr.
Sexton is another new member
of the faculty of Chowan College.
A native of Lansing, N. C., he
holds the A. A. degree from
Lee-McRae College, the B. S.
and M. A. degrees from Appa
lachian, and has done additional
graduate work toward his Ph.
D. degree. He likes sports and
LEVI GILLIKIN, JR. — Mr.
Gillikin is a native of Norfolk,
Va. He is a professor of math

ment. This is his first year at
Chowan. Mr. Gillikin’s interest
is religion and his hobbies are
fishing and reading. His first
impression of Chowan was “How
old are these trees?” His favor

MRS. NEVA CAMPBELL—
A native of Murfreesboro, Mrs.
Campbell is a graduate of Cho
wan College and the University
of North Carolina in Library
Science. She has been at Cho
wan as librarian since 1957.
DR. WILLIAM C. YOUNG—
A graduate of Stetson Univer
sity, Deland, Fla., he holds the
B. D., M. R. E., and D. R. E.
degrees from the New Orleans
Seminary. He is a native of New
Orleans, Louisiana. Dr. Young
has assumed leadership respon
sibilities in the Baptist Student
Union program at Chowan Col
lege, is college chaplain, and is
in student guidance and counsel
ing. His interest is golf and fish
ing, and his favorite food is rice
with gravy.
JAMES M. CHAMBLEE —
From Chapel Hill, Mr. Cham-
blee has been appointed profes
sor and acting chairman of the
Daniel School of Music at Cho
wan College. He was graduated
from Walter Williams High
School in Burlington, and holds
the A. B. degree in music from
the University of North Caro
lina, and M. A. degree in music
from Columbia University. He
has also done graduate work at
U. N. C. toward the Ph. D. de
gree. Mr. Chamblee’s favorite
food is hamburgers and his first
impression of Chowan was, “I
like it.” He is married to Carla
S. Chamblee, who is also a new
teacher at Chowan this year.
MRS. JAMES M. CHAMBLEE
Teacher of piano and organ,
Mrs. Chamblee is from Chapel
Hill. She is a graduate of U. N.
C. and has done study toward
her M. A. in music. Her pet

This year Chowtn has the
largest number of students
enrolled in its history, which
is 462. There are 334 living
on the campus. Also, there
are 58 students living off cam
pus in the homes of families
in Murfreesboro. There are
290 freshmen and 172 sopho
mores.
Chowan has 70 day students.
Fourteen different religious
denominations are represent
ed. There are 301 Baptists;
88 Methodists; 18 Presbyter
ians; 4 Catholics; 19 Christ
ian Church; 10 Episcopalians;
3 Holiness; 7 Lutherans; 7
Church of Christ: 1 Buddhist;
1 Quaker; 1 Nazarene; 1 Je-
hovahs Witnesses.
Chowan has 4 foreign stud
ents this year. They are Ed
and Jay Maybud from Iran;
Primchai Patchimsawat, Thai
land; and Louis del Reigo,
from Cuba.
J. IRVING BROOKS — Mr.
Brooks, dean of the college, is
from Richmond, Va. This is his
third year at Chowan. He grad
uated from William and Mary
with a B. A. degree, and from
the University of Virginia with
a M. A. degree.
JERRY L. HAWKINS— As
sistant Coach Hawkins is a na
tive of Shelby. This is his second
year as one of C h o w a n’s
coaches. His interest naturally,
centers around sports. The
coach says his hobby is work
ing with crafts. He is not mar
ried, and his pet peeve is people
who gripe.
HAROLD F. BROWN—He is
a Graphic Arts graduate of Cho
wan College and teacher in that
department for the fourth year.
Mr. Brown is a native of Ham
let. His hobbies are golf and
fishing.
BELA UDVAROKI— Chair
man of the department of social
science, he is a graduate of the
University of Budapest, Univer
sity of Hamburg, University of
Chicago and Southern Baptist
Theological Seminary. He is a
native of Budapest, Hungary.
He has been at Chowan since
1952.
LIN YEAR MAYO WALLACE,
JR.—A second year man on
Chowan’s campus, he is a native
of Washington, N. C., and a
member of the department of
business. He is a graduate of
East Carolina College. Mr. Wal
lace’s interest is “dates”, and
he says he’s not married “but
would like to be.”
ANNA BELLE CROUCH —

Belle Crouch is a graduate of

lege, Carver School of Missions
and Social Work, School of
Music of Southern Baptist The

Carolina College. ’This is her
Second year at Chowan.
LIONEL L. BISHOP, JR—He
is a native of Greenville and a
teacher of mathematics at
Chowan. This is his fourth year
here. Mr. Bishop received his
B. S. and M. A. degrees from
East Carolina College.
FRANCIS M. TUCKER — A
graduate of the University of
North Carolina, he is in his
second year at Chowan. He is a
member of the department of
science and his interest is bot
any and zoology. Mr. Tucker is
married, and his favorite food
is broiled steak.
JOHN McSWEENEY — Mr.
McSweeney is the director of the
department of Graphic Arts and
is a Master Printer. He has been
at Chowan since 1952.
MRS. F. O. MIXON — Mrs.
Mixon is a native of Anderson,
S. C., and a chairman of the
department of religion. She has
taught here eight years and she
enjoys traveling.
JAMES ROBERT MASTERS
A native of Oak Ridge, Ten
nessee, and a professor of the
department of business, he re
ceived his B. S. degree at Berea
College in Berea, Kentucky, and
did graduate work at the Uni
versity of Tennessee.
F. MILAM JOHNSON—Mr.
Johnson is a native of Eure and
a graduate of East Carolina
College with a B. A. and M. A.
degree. He is chairman of the
science department and in his
fifth year at Chowan.
WILLIAM I. MARABLE—Mr.
Marable is a teacher of English
Literature. He is a graduate of
William and Mary, with a B. A.
degree. He also has degrees
from the University of Virginia
and Duke University.
WILLIAM B. SOWELL —
William Sowell of Pageland,
S. C. is a teacher in the school
of printing. He has been here for
five years. His interest is sports,
and his favorite food is steak.
Mr. Sowell is a graduate of the
School of Graphic Arts at Cho
wan College.
THOMAS E. RUFFIN, JR.—
Mr. Ruffin, of Ahoskie, N. C.,
is head of the department of
business and a graduate of East
Carolina CoUege. He is begin
ning his third year at Chowan.
MRS. BRUCE WHITAKER—
Wife of the president of Chowan
College and teacher of religion
and speech, she is in her third
year here. Mrs. Whitaker is in
terested in students and her
family. Her hobby is sewing,
and her favorite food is ham.
Mrs. Whitaker’s first impression
of Chowan was a “friendly and
cordial campus.” Her pet peeve
is “students who say there’s
nothing to do!”
FRANCES E. WHITE — A
native of Boykins, Virginia, and
a teacher in religion and Eng
lish, she has taught at Chowan
for six years. She is a graduate
from Radford College and Car
ver School of Missions and
Social Work. Her hobby is
scrabble and her pet peeve is
“lazyitis, a disease of some
students.” When asked if she
was married Miss White said,
“Not quite!”
JAMES G. GARRISON —
Chairman of physical education
and head coach, Mr. Garrison
is a graduate of Gardner-Webb
Junior College and Western
Carolina College. He received a
B. S. degree in education. This
is his second year at Chowan.
He is coach of the football, bas-
ketball, and track teams. His
favorite food is home-made
rolls, and his hobbies are fishing
and sports.
M. EUGENE WILLIAMS —
Chairman of the department of
modem languages. He graduat
ed from the University of Rich
mond and Duke University, and
L’ University de Dijan, France,
with Premier Degree.
