THE CHOWANIAN, OCTOBER 1959 Members of The Queens Court Six of Chowan’s loveliest co eds were chosen from both the freshman and sophomore class es to be members of the Home coming Queen’s court. Chosen by their classmates, these girls were honored in the Kiwanis Bowl parade in Ahoskie Sept. 26, and in the Chowan College Homecoming parade in Mur freesboro, Oct. 3. Miss Geneva Congleton, Wash ington, N.C., is a sophomore at Chowan. She is very active in her school activities and she also has a lot of extra-curricular responsibilities. Miss Bonnie Tinkham, Nor folk, Va., is in her second year at Chowan. She is pursueing a curriculum in physical educa tion and she teaches a swim ming class. Miss Audrey Marriner, Hick ory, Va., is also a sophomore. She is studying to become a teacher. She has been very active in all of our campus ac tivities and she is a valuable asset to the college. Miss Vivian Burgess of Con way is one of Chowan’s many commuting students. As a fresh man, Miss Burgess is turning out to be one of the most pop ular young ladies on campus. Miss Lois Jones, freshman from Red Oak, is a teletype setter student in the Graphic Arts department. She is to be commended on the fine work she is doing at Chowan. Miss Linda Bradshaw of Franklin, Va., was chosen to the Queen’s court by a huge major- iety of her classmates. Although she is only a freshman, Miss Bradshaw is a very popular member of our student body. Enrollment Has Steady Increase other institutions of higher education in North Carolina may have many more students than Chowan College, but not many of them have had a more rapid percentage growth in recent years. The 460 regular enrollees who make up this year’s Chowan College student body represent an enrollment increase of 50 per cent over the past two years, and a more than 100 per cent increase over the num ber of regular students enrolled at Chowan three years ago. Naturally, North Carolinians abound at Chowan, and they hail from 55 different counties across the length and breadth of the state. Virginians abound at Chowan, too—about 130 young Cavaliers are currently enrolled at the college. Six other states are represent ed in the Chowan student body and Cuba as well. But the Chowanians from the rock bound coasts of Maine or the sun baked sands of Cuba actual ly traveled only around the block to get to college when compared with the 9,000 miles traveled by two brothers from Iran or the 12,500 mile journey undertaken by a tiny Thailand coed. Commenting on the phenom enal growth of the institution he serves as president. Dr. Bruce E. Whitaker said it could be attributed largely to the ex pansion of Chowan’s physical facilities as a result of the cur rent development program, and to the full accreditation grant ed the college three years ago by the Southern Association o f Colleges and Secondary Schools.
