THE CHOWANIAN, OCTOBER 1959 Large Crowd On Hand For Chowan Homecoming f. ■mi ^L- »y^ FIRST AWARD - GRAPHIC ARTS DEPARTMENT FLOAT It was a day such as to be remembered in the years when memories bring back happy events. It was Saturday, Octo ber 3, 1959 . . . Homecoming Day for Chowan College. There were lovely prancing majorettes, and band music . . . a parade in which gayly deco rated floats carried attractive co-eds from the more than 100 on Chowan’s campus; and there were queens (everyone of them) in beautiful gowns waving from convertibles to the several thou sand spectators who lined Mur freesboro’s main street to watch the passing parade. Of course there were alu mni . . . some from long dis tances . . . who came to see the many changes . the growing alma mater . . . and to talk excitedly with old class mates. So much to talk about . . . even children ... of course (new or old) boy or girl friends . . and the days at Chowan . . . “remember when—”. The crowd at the football game between Frederick and Chowan was the greatest . . . nearly 600 paid admissions . . . of course there were a couple of hundred free-loaders also in the mass that almost encircled the high school field. It was a merry kind of crowd even when Frederick was pouring on the touchdowns . . . (thought while scribling notes: if the Braves had fought as hard in the first three quarters as they did in the last, perhaps the score would not have been Frederick 27, Braves 14. The Floats There was a parade prior to the football game ... a police car . the Ahoskie High School band . . . cars with Dr. and Mrs. Whitaker, Dean and Mrs. Brooks being recognized by the people along the way . . . »0F[H^I5TlliN .WV'l mil I' .11 SECOND AWARD - BSU FLOAT HOMECOMING QUEEN JACKIE ANDERSON A THIRD AWARD - SOPHOMORE CLASS STUDENT N. With the exception of one or two floats the students not only did the decorating but paid for the materials used. Campus DecoTations Some campus decorations were attractive . . . some sug gestive of what would happen (but didn’t) to Frederick’s foot ball team ... all of them re presented planning and much work by the students occupying the various dorms. The “Big House” had a blue and white Chowan emblem . . . made of white napkins and blue paper . . . hanging on the secord floor between the big columns ... 15 by 15 feet in size . . . lettering—made of blue paper—was set on a white back ground. This won an award from the judges. The girls’s dorm had a trac tor and mower . . . with a dummy standing on the mower . . . and a sign saying “Mow them down, Chowan.” The men in the “old presi dents home” had a simulated football field . . . with dummies dressed in Chowan uniforms . . . one carrying an ugly stick to push Fredrick off the field. Also a plow on the field with a sign that read, “We’re going to plow Fredrick under.” Over the steps of the house a white design with blue letters spelled out Chowan. This dorm tied with the “Big House” as the best. The men’s dorm had a minia ture graveyard . . . with 11 graves . . . each representing one of the Frederick players . . . and a sign reading, “Here lies Fredrick.” Pie-Game Clowning Prior to the start of the foot ball game between Frederick and Chowan, Dr. Bruce E. Whit aker, president of Chowan, plac ed the crown on Queen Jackie Anderson who was surrounded by her court members and their escorts. (It should be reported that the Queen received a del icate kiss on the cheek from Dr. Bruce . . . after he had placed the crowd on her pretty head.) The Queen’s court and their escorts . . . Audrey Marriner, Hickory, Va., with Harry D. Sell, Southport; Lois “Bunny” Jones, Red Oak, with John Bra ke, Rocky Mount; Geneva Con- gleton, Washington, N. C., with John Bryant, Rescue, Va.; Bon nie Tinkham, Alexandria, Va., with Lawrence Swain, Manteo; Linda Bradshaw, Franklin, Va., with Rice Day, also of Frank lin; Vivian Burgess, Conway, with Herman Moore, Hampton, Va.; Queen Jackie Anderson, of Severn, was escorted by “Bunk” Roberson. Washington, N. C. A Special Homecoming All to soon there'll be another Homecoming Day at Chowan . but somehow this one . . . the 1959 Home coming Day . . . was all filled with brightness for a great future for the old college ... it kind of seperated the struggling days of being reborn from evi dent advancement in material as well as educational growth. Yes, Saturday, October 3, 1959 , . . Homecoming Day . . . will linger with the several hun dred who enjoyed its moments.
